An Arabic and Persian wedding at St Ethelburga’s London

There is a unique allure to a London City wedding, particularly when it takes place in one of the capital's "hidden gems." St Ethelburga’s, nestled amidst the towering glass of the financial district, provided the most exquisite backdrop for Nadia and Amir’s wedding—a day that was a true masterclass in cultural fusion and logistical orchestration.

1. Honouring Arabic and Persian traditions

For Nadia and Amir, the priority was clear; they had already booked the venue and caterer, and they wanted expert guidance to bring their vision of a seamless blend of their Arabic and Persian heritage to life, using this blank canvas venue. They booked my Vision Partner service, and I worked closely with them over 6 months to ensure every tradition was given the space it deserved.

The heart of the day was the traditional Persian ceremony, led by a Haji. Central to this was the Sofreh Aghd—a tradition with over 2,500 years of history. The "Sofreh" (spread) is a beautiful, ornamental cloth laid out with symbolic items, each representing a quality the couple hopes to carry into their new life together. One of the most moving moments was the "showering of sweetness," where happily married female relatives ground sugar cones over a fabric held above the couple’s heads. It was a ceremony defined by deep emotion and ancient rhythm, set against the venue’s stunning stained-glass windows.

For the evening, the Persian wedding sword dance, or "Raghseh Chagoo" (knife dance), was conducted as a lively, traditional performance where a dancer (in this case, the bride's brothers) playfully holds the wedding cake knife hostage, dancing with it to tease the couple. The groom must bribe the dancer with money to get the knife, symbolising his commitment and willingness to overcome obstacles for his bride. It was fun to watch.

2. The art of the room "triple flip"

While the day felt serene and effortless for the guests, the logistics behind the scenes required absolute precision. St Ethelburga’s is a beautiful but intimate dry-hire space, which meant my team and I had to prepare the same area three separate times: for the ceremony, the wedding breakfast, and finally, the evening reception.

Managing a "triple flip" in a heritage building requires a high level of orchestration. We curated a team of specialist suppliers who understood the pace required, ensuring that as the guests moved to the courtyard for harp music and canapés, the interior was transformed without a hitch.

3. A wedding design rooted in nature

To complement the intricate architecture of the venue, the design was kept intentionally natural and relaxed. We opted for a palette of ivory, soft browns, and organic greens.

The Tablescapes: Long tables in a U shape were lined with foliage garlands and an abundance of candles to create a warm, intimate ambience as the London sun set.
The Feast: The evening transitioned into a magnificent Persian feast, followed by a high-energy dance floor where the DJ masterfully blended Arabic, Persian, R'n'B, and English tracks.

4. The value of the "emotional safety net"

Multicultural weddings are joyful, but they are also complex. Nadia and Amir said that having me and my team on board "took all our stresses away." Planning a fusion wedding: Ghanaian-Italian wedding in a London dry hire venue

A Ghanaian-Italian wedding celebration is more than just a beautiful concept—it is a vibrant, complex tapestry with a deep cultural heartbeat. For my clients, Tash and Darren their vision was to embrace their rich heritages with a modern, sophisticated twist. To bring this to life in a dry-hire venue at Forty Hall Coach House, London (a true blank canvas) they booked my Vision Partner service . My involvement required a delicate balance of creative design and expert orchestration.

1. Translating the wedding vision - The "Italian Essence" design

I worked with Tash and Darren for 6 months, from sourcing key suppliers for them who understood their needs, to creating their wedding design. They wanted a day that felt colourful and relaxed yet undeniably elegant and blended their cultures. I presented three distinct design ideas, and they were drawn to the "Italian Essence" concept.

The palette was a sophisticated blend of ivory and lilac. To transform the space, I and my team and I curated several striking features:

The floral details: I recommended Tubes Floral, which provided beautiful flower arrangements in ivory and lilac that softened the venue.
The focal point: From my own styling collection , I provided a stunning two-foot eucalyptus moongate, creating a lush, organic backdrop for their vows and as repurposed later in the evening as an ideal spot to display their gorgeous wedding cake.
Travel inspired wedding details: The couple’s love for travel was woven throughout the day, including tables named after the various countries they travelled to and a little detail about each country. They also had a bespoke cake by Keep it Cake , featuring a hand-painted map and a lilac-toned flight path.
Extra details - they even had an ice cream truck, providing Italian gelato to guests.

2. A modern twist on tradition

Their wedding day began with a beautiful intersection of cultures. To honour the couple's roots, my team and I helped facilitate a revised, shorter version of the traditional Ghanaian "knocking ceremony." This is a spirited tradition where the groom’s family enters and presents gifts. Questions are asked of the groom to ensure he is marrying the right person and to seek formal permission to marry the bride.

Orchestrated beautifully by Jacqui Bull, the celebrant I sourced for them, this ceremony provided a soulful, high energy opening to the day. It was followed by a traditional British ceremony, creating a seamless transition between the couple's multiple cultural identities.

3. Orchestrating the "reception room flip"

A wedding of 180 guests in a dry-hire venue requires a high level of logistical mastery. While Tash and Darren were immersed in their ceremony, my team and I were working behind the scenes to lead the operation.

This involved managing a dedicated crew of four Pearline Events professionals and a curated team of specialist vendors to execute the "reception flip." Turning the same room from the ceremony to the reception. We handled every detail, from the layout of the furniture to the fine-tuning of the aesthetic features. By acting as the central point of contact, I ensured that the heavy lifting remained invisible to the gu ests.

4. Protecting the cultural heartbeat

The true value of having an expert hand-off for your wedding is that it creates space for the family to be entirely present. In multicultural celebrations, family dynamics and traditions are paramount. My background in counselling allows me to act as an emotional safety net, navigating these complexities so that the families can remain guests of honour rather than feeling responsible for the day's success.

A Ghanaian-English Fusion: Planning a colourful marquee wedding at a private home in Uckfield, East Sussex

For clients Ben and Paula, the vision was clear - a celebration that felt as vibrant and soulful as the Summer Solstice day on which their wedding took place. To honour their Ghanaian and English heritages, they wanted vibrance and warmth and to be relaxed. I helped them create a day that transformed a private family home in Uckfield, East Sussex, into a sanctuary of light and energy. Inspired by the colours and tone of a summer sunset, I created a design that focused on a palette of fuchsia pink, vivid orange, and shimmering silver.

We moved beyond traditional marquee styling, opting instead for a playful edge with clusters of disco balls and glass textures—from candlesticks to coloured water glasses—added a sophisticated sparkle. This wasn't just a wedding; it was a joyful orchestration of contemporary style, designed to ensure that as the longest day of the year transitioned into evening, the couple (and their 120 guests) remained entirely present in the harmony of the moment.

1. A sun-drenched ceremony in the garden

The heart of the day began on the lawn, where the summer sun provided a natural spotlight for the celebrant-led ceremony. Choosing a celebrant allowed Ben and Paula the freedom to craft a service that felt like them —balancing English tradition with the rhythmic, joyful energy of their Ghanaian roots. They included ring warming, readings and ring exchange. They also incorporated a separate libation (a ritual where liquids are poured on the ground as an offering to honour ancestors) in a nod to Paula’s Ghanaian roots.

Despite the two rain downpours that occurred in the morning of the wedding, my team and I had to manage the unexpected weather change and the issues that raises. We had a wet weather plan; however, Ben and Paula's vision was to be wed outside. We waited until the rain passed, and it was a good call, as the sun shone afterwards.

Ben and Paula exchanged vows outside without a drop of rain in sight. My team ensured the garden was perfectly staged, creating an intimate pocket of calm within the expansive grounds. There were personal touches too, with a wedding arch created by groom Ben and his brother.

2. Translating the sunset: The design concept

Their wedding design was rooted in the beauty of a June Summer. I presented a mood board that moved away from the expected, focusing instead on a ‘sunset vibe’ that felt energetic and joyful.

In the marquee, we brought this wedding vision to life through

The colour palette: A bold collision of fuchsia pink and orange, punctuated by silver accents.
Texture & light: Coloured water glasses and glass candlesticks with tapered candles added height and interest to the tablescapes. Colourful napkins also added a pop of colour.
The florals: Vivid floral centrepieces acted as the anchor, mirroring the warmth of a solstice evening.
The edge: Instead of traditional drapes, we used clusters of disco balls to provide an unusual, impactful backdrop that transformed from a chic day-time feature into a shimmering party essential as the night began.

3. Orchestrating the "Blank Canvas" in Uckfield

Planning a wedding at a private home is a significant undertaking that requires a delicate balance of empathy and logistics. Because I specialise in blank-canvas venues, we handled the fundamental orchestration long before the first guest arrived. I was able to source excellent suppliers to deliver to Ben and Paula’s needs.

Managing a marquee built on a private estate involves overseeing everything from power distribution, lighting to the precise placement of luxury loos, all while respecting the sanctity of a family home. We had 6 months to plan this wedding. The majority of the work happened behind the scenes in the months leading up to the day, from sourcing the right suppliers, dealing with challenges that arose, providing ideas on the design, complex logistics and flow of their day and supporting Ben and Paula throughout.

I was also on-site the day before to manage all this. By serving as the single point of contact for every supplier, I provided a professional safety net that allowed the couple’s family to enjoy the transformation of their property without the weight of the "behind-the-scenes" complexity and on the wedding day get ready without worrying about things.

Planning a celebration on a private estate requires a transition from "event planning" into "site management." I have curated a Marquee masterplan that outlines the 15 non-negotiables for building a venue from the ground up—from power distribution to guest flow. Ensuring your blank canvas is as functional as it is beautiful.

4. A fusion of heritage and style

The beauty of a Ghanaian-English wedding lies in the details. Throughout the day, we ensured that both cultures were woven seamlessly into the fabric of the event. Whether it was the transition from the structured ceremony to the vibrant, high-energy reception or the way the table linen featured a playful mixture of pink and orange napkins, or a sample of kente cloth used on the cake table. Every choice was a deliberate nod to the couple's shared journey and what was important to them.

5. Present in the moment

As the evening drew in and the disco balls began to scatter light across the dance floor, the true success of the day was visible in Ben and Paula themselves. My unique background in counselling allows me to navigate the complex family dynamics that often arise in multicultural celebrations, ensuring that the atmosphere remains harmonious.

There's a unique magic to Chiswick House and Gardens. From the moment I first stepped onto its grounds, I knew I wanted to craft a shoot that showcased its striking architecture and heritage. As the planner and creative director, my vision was to draw inspiration from the venue's grandeur—from the gorgeous terrace, to the delicate gold details inside the house, to the charm of the classic Italian gardens—and translate it into a sophisticated, colourful inspiration for modern couples.

I handpicked an incredible team of suppliers to bring this concept to life, and we are beyond thrilled that the result graced the front cover of Your London Wedding Magazine , a well-respected publication in the industry. This feature is a special honour and a testament to the power of a cohesive, beautifully executed vision.

A romantic ceremony set against historic grandeur

The elegant stone terrace at Chiswick House provided the perfect canvas for our ceremony vision. We transformed the space with a breathtaking, deconstructed floral arch overflowing with an abundance of blush and deep pink roses, peonies, and carnations, all softened by lush greenery. This created a romantic focal point that felt both organic and opulent, framed by the venue's majestic backdrop.

An opulent tablescape inspired by Italian design

For the reception tablescape, we mirrored the ornate gold details found throughout Chiswick House. Gilded charger plates and gold-rimmed glassware complemented the centrepiece: a magnificent, low floral runner that continued our pink and white palette.

The atmosphere was elevated with the soft glow from tall glass candlesticks from my own Pearline Events styling collection , creating an ambience of warmth and timeless romance.

Timeless bridal style

The bride exuded modern elegance in her stunning V-neck gown, complemented by gorgeous waves and polished makeup. Her look was accentuated by beautiful handcrafted earrings, adding a unique touch. The groom, in his classic tuxedo, completed the picture of timeless romance. Along with the bridesmaid in her pretty, flattering pink dress.

Showstopping wedding cake

No elegant celebration is complete without a showstopping cake. Our three-tiered masterpiece featured a draped design adorned with wafer-thin, handcrafted sugar flowers in pink and white, perfectly complemented by bespoke pink macarons delicately finished with gold leaf.

The finishing touches: tying the past to the present

To truly personalise the experience and honour the venue's history, we designed a bespoke invitation suite. The place cards featured handwritten calligraphy with the names of some of Chiswick House’s historic visitors, beautifully tying the past to the present.

How we planned a bilingual Afro-French Fusion wedding in Kent

The vision: creating an enjoyable, bilingual wedding

When Ruth and Maxime first shared their vision, they described a desire for an “intimate and unique experience” that would fuse their Ghanaian and French heritages . The aim was to create a relaxing, fun environment where both sides of their families could connect, effortlessly overcoming any language barriers. This is the kind of creative challenge I specialise in at Pearline Events.

The success of such a personalised, dry-hire wedding lies in a structured yet flexible approach. My decade of project management in the Civil Service is the backbone of this process, ensuring no detail is overlooked.

1. A ceremony in two languages

We began with the heart of the day, the ceremony. A deeply personal Christian service was created that seamlessly wove together Bible scripture in English with readings and vows in French . They had 2 readers, one who spoke in English and the other in French. They also had bilingual programmes made, which ensured every guest felt included and engaged from the first moment. The whole ceremony was conducted in English and French, with a French interpreter available throughout the day. Their ceremony took place outdoors under the trees.

2. The 'Trou Normand' a fusion highlight

The most memorable fusion element was the ‘trou normand’ —a Norman tradition of serving a Calvados sorbet between courses. We elevated this into an interactive experience.

Maxime’s groomsmen personally served the apple sorbet, to each guest, with the option to add Calvados an apple brandy, after the fish course. It is said that drinking this in the middle of a meal helps digestion, which is especially needed when you are having a 5-course meal!

This pause became a joyful, ice-breaking ritual that perfectly symbolised the union of two families.

3. A culinary fusion - crafting the perfect Afro-French wedding menu

From our initial conversations, it was clear that an exceptional culinary experience was a top priority for Ruth and Maxime. They dreamed of a menu that would be a true conversation between their heritages, leading to a perfectly executed Ghanaian and French fusion wedding menu and Delicious catering delivered.

The result was a five-course feast that took guests on a delicious journey:

A refined French fish starter set the tone.
Followed by their 'Tru Normand' appetiser
Hearty and flavourful mains featured cultural dishes like jerk chicken, rice and peas, and a rich Ghanaian beef stew (which tasted so good).
A cheese course offering a selection of both French classics and local Kent ones.

Each course was expertly paired with a French wine. A thoughtful touch that encapsulated the entire day was the bilingual menus, available in both French and English . This ensured every single guest, from both sides of the family, felt included and could fully appreciate the culinary story being told. It’s these details that make a multicultural celebration truly seamless.

To honour the serene beauty of their Kent venue, Ruth and Maxime chose a timeless colour palette of crisp white and lush greenery. This classic choice created a sense of elegant calm that perfectly complemented the natural landscape.

A key to our design (and a favourite sustainable practice of mine) was repurposing the ceremony florals . I used the beautiful arrangements that framed their vows to adorn the ends of their long reception tables. This not only created a cohesive look throughout the day but also ensured nothing went to waste. A few were also added to the DJ booth to tie everything in.

To add interest to the tables and a touch of warmth and ambience, they hired pillar candles and glass vases from my Pearline Events styling collection . As the evening drew in, the soft, flickering candlelight transformed the marquee space, making it feel incredibly intimate and romantic.

5. Managing a flawless dry-hire wedding day

As a specialist in blank-canvas venues , for Maxime and Ruth’s wedding, a marquee was set up on the grounds a day before, with me on site to manage the complexities. Having a marquee allowed for the space and personalisation that they wanted to bring their fusion wedding to life. On the wedding day itself, I managed the intricate logistics, overseeing their suppliers to ensure what was delivered was as agreed in line with a detailed timeline I created for all suppliers. My role was to be the single point of contact, solving problems before they arose, whilst working with my assistant to get everything set up and support guests.

The result? As the couple reflected, they were able to be "happy and present," truly relaxing into their celebration. The evening ended with a vibrant DJ and fun wedding games, getting all the guests involved. A fantastic day for all!

Garden wedding inspiration: An elegant & colourful shoot at Eastwell Manor, Kent

As a design-led wedding planner, my greatest joy is transforming a venue's natural beauty into a couple's perfect day. For this shoot at the stunning Eastwell Manor in Kent, I drew inspiration from a theme of renewal and joy, creating an elegant, colourful celebration that was featured on the Junebug Wedding Blog .

The vision: celebrating a new beginning

Every great design starts with a story. This one was about the powerful emergence of light after a time of darkness. It symbolised a couple embarking on their new journey of marriage after a long-distance relationship, mirroring the way plants burst into bloom with the new season. I aimed to capture that feeling of hope, joy, and vibrant new life.

The colour palette: uplifting elegance in the garden

To bring this vision to life, I curated a colour palette of sunny canary yellow, peach, orange, crisp white, and gold, set against the lush green backdrop of Eastwell Manor's exquisite gardens. The yellow was intentional—a direct representation of joy and light, chosen to create a striking and uplifting contrast. All the suppliers were given this brief to work from, and their creations worked so beautifully.

A tablescape with two perfect backdrops

I knew the central walkway was the ideal stage. It offered a breathtaking dual view: the majestic manor house behind and the picturesque fountain and North Downs ahead. This location perfectly framed our celebration within the very beauty that inspired it.

The table design was a stunning floral cascade created by the talented florist, full of my favourite roses, peonies, dahlias and other seasonal flowers. Having a floral runner like this allowed us to showcase all the beautiful blooms, whilst the table details complemented it.

For the table details, I chose classic, reflective elements to let the colourful details shine. From my own Pearline Events styling collection , I used vintage glass candlesticks, elegant gold charger plates, and gilded cutlery. The final, joyful touch? Vibrant canary yellow candles that lifted the entire design, making it feel both timeless and fresh.

Bringing the vision to life

The 3 tier wedding cake was beautifully designed to complement everything. The exquisite abundance of handmade sugar flowers was stunning and looked so real.

A gorgeous, elegant floral stationery suite was designed, which carried on the elegant, colourful theme and tied everything together.

A shoot like this is a collaboration of brilliant talents. I had the privilege of hand-picking an incredible team of suppliers who understood my vision and helped me deliver it flawlessly. Our work is a reminder not to be afraid of using bold colours in your wedding, in an elegant way.

How to plan a fusion wedding: decor tips for blending cultures

Planning your wedding is a beautiful journey, and the details matter even more when blending your cultures, traditions and styles. Whether you’re hosting a fusion wedding or honouring multiple heritages, your decor sets the tone for the day. To help you create a seamless and stunning celebration, I’ve crafted the ultimate wedding decor checklist, with ideas for an elegant multicultural wedding.

1. Multicultural wedding table decor

Your wedding reception tables are where your traditions or cultures unite. Blend elements from both backgrounds for a cohesive yet meaningful design. Ideas for your fusion wedding.

Floral centrepieces - combine traditional blooms or those with a cultural significance (for example peonies for Western elegance or marigolds for South Asian vibrancy).
Place settings - use charger plates with traditional patterns or decorate chairs with cultural elements (such as cloths or fans)
Menus - offer dishes from both cuisines, with descriptions explaining their cultural importance. Also, if you have lots of guests who speak different languages, provide menus in both languages, like English and French.

2. Multicultural wedding ceremony decor ideas

Your ceremony is the heart of your multicultural wedding. Incorporate décor with symbolism.

Aisle déco r - line the path with lanterns, floral garlands, or fabric representing both cultures.
Ceremony backdrop - mix elements where possible. For example, to represent Indian and British cultures you could have an Indian mandap with a British floral arch. Or decorate your ceremony with a combination of Kente fabric or Nigerian Ankara fabric drapes.
Ceremony programmes - include translations or symbols to guide guests through blended rituals.
My bonus tip - use a unity ceremony like sand pouring or candle-lighting to blend both yourselves and your wedding traditions visually. A celebrant can provide this for you.

3. Wedding reception decor: celebrating your love story

Let your wedding reception decor reflect your journey together

Seating Plan - group guests by “cultural” tables or mix them to encourage connection.
Dessert table - feature treats from both backgrounds (e.g. French croquembouche and Indian gulab jamun).
Signage - use bilingual signage or labels for a seamless guest experience.
My bonus tip - create a world map with your love story’s milestones as a backdrop.

4. Cocktail Hour: Interactive cultural touches

Keep your guests energy high with interactive decor.

Games - always work. Such as garden games to get your guests mingling or cultural stations - like a henna or bindi spot for guests to embrace the diversity.
Bar menu - offer drinks from your culture (like Rum punch) or create a signature cocktail named after your heritage (Moscow Mule meets Masala Chai) or something important to you both, like a pet or a place.

5. Personal touches for your wedding

Small details can leave a lasting impression on your wedding guests and help to make it unique. Here are some ideas

Favours - add a small keepsake at each table that either reflects your cultures and/or is something edible, so it won’t get wasted.
Music - create a playlist that includes music from your respective cultural beats. Light your venue with uplights or fairy lights to create the right vibe.
Photo booth - for example if you are combining Irish and Nigerian cultures, you could create a photo booth with props that include Nigerian gele headwraps and Irish flatcaps, allowing guests to celebrate both cultures in their photos.

The opulence and glamour of the Great Gatsby era continue to captivate couples, and for good reason. It’s a theme that invites drama, luxury, and unforgettable style. As a Kent wedding planner and stylist, I was thrilled to lead the styling for this editorial shoot, bringing the 1920s vibe to life with a brilliant team of local suppliers at the magnificent Nursted Court.

The Gatsby vision

Our vision was clear: to embrace the pure opulence of the era. We curated a sophisticated black, gold, and white colour scheme, layering in exquisite vintage details through props, fashion, and florals. The result was something truly magical, a testament to what happens when talented creatives come together with a shared vision.

This Gatsby-inspired shoot was honoured to be featured on the front cover of the November/December 2019 issue of Your Kent Wedding Magazine and was also published on the Unconventional Wedding Blog .

Nursted Court, with its elegant architecture and rich history, provided the perfect backdrop for this glamorous affair. Every detail was thoughtfully chosen to transport you to the Roaring Twenties:

Opulent Styling: From luxurious velvets and art deco geometry to shimmering gold accents.
Bridal Glamour: A stunning bride in an iconic flapper-style gown, complete with exquisite headpieces and accessories.
Vintage Touches: A classic car, elegant stationery, and a breathtaking balloon installation that added a modern yet timeless twist.

The Decorative details

Candles - creating an opulent, romantic glow

Lighting is one of the most powerful tools to transform a venue's atmosphere. For this shoot, we drew inspiration from the timeless romance of candlelight. By grouping elegant pillar candles on the grand fireplace at Nursted Court, we created pockets of warm, flickering light that enhanced the opulent mood. This glow, accentuated by the soft reflections from gold accents, is a perfect way to add depth, romance, and a touch of drama to your celebration—especially in the evening.

The cake - a centrepiece of glitz and glamour

Every detail in a Gatsby-themed event should whisper luxury, and the cake is a prime opportunity for show-stopping glamour. Our bespoke creation was a masterpiece of edible artistry, designed to capture the era's glitz and opulence. It featured exquisite details like delicate pleats, strands of pearls, elegant feathers, and sparkling diamanté. This approach proves how a thoughtfully designed cake can transcend dessert to become a central decorative element that wows your guests.

Florals - classic with a dramatic impact

Florals are essential for adding colour, texture, and character to your design. For this shoot, we chose a classic palette of ivory and white flowers to complement the black and gold scheme, creating a look of sophisticated purity. Moody Blooms crafted stunning arrangements of white roses, anemones, and eucalyptus, which we used to frame the candlelit fireplace. This combination provided a lush, textured backdrop that was both dramatic and timeless, proving that flowers are as much about setting the scene as they are about beauty.

Marriage tips for engaged couples

As a wedding planner I spend a lot of time talking about your wedding day. What I don’t talk about much is marriage. Amongst the busyness of wedding planning don’t forget why you are doing it all, to be married to your love, your partner. In this post I will share a bit about my own marriage and provide 5 essential marriage tips for engaged couples: in building a strong and lasting relationship.

My husband Darion and I (pictured above) will be celebrating our 10th wedding anniversary this year and over that time it has been a journey. We still say our marriage is a "work in progress"! I cannot claim to be an expert on marriage as every union is different. That said here are a few things I have learned.

Marriage Tip 1 - Communication in marriage

I’ll admit it—communication is one of those things that sounds obvious, but it’s so easy to get wrong. In the early days of our marriage (and to be truthful sometimes I still revert back to this approach), I had a habit of bottling things up. If something bothered me, I’d sit on it for weeks, hoping my hubby would figure out what was wrong. Spoiler alert: he didn't! He’s not a mind reader. Instead, I’d end up frustrated, and my husband had no idea why. Over time, I’ve learned that avoiding conflict doesn’t work—it just creates distance. Living together means you can’t dodge tough conversations forever, and honestly, that’s a good thing. Facing issues head-on, even when it’s uncomfortable, has been a game-changer for us.

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is the importance of timing. In the middle of an argument, all I want to do is make my point (am I alone with that?). But I’ve realised that when emotions run high, it’s okay to hit pause. Sometimes (not always) my husband and I will take a breather— I often need time alone to cool off or process what’s really bothering me. When we come back to the conversation, it’s easier to listen to each other and work through the issue. I’m not saying I'm not still annoyed but usually I am calmer. I have realised (the hard way) that it's not about winning or being right; it’s about understanding, apologising when needed, and finding a way forward. Conflict is a natural part of any relationship, it's how you handle it that can make all the difference. These conversations aren’t always easy, but they’ve brought us closer and helped us grow—both as individuals and as a couple.

Marriage Tip 2 - Spiritual unity and prayer in marriage

My husband and I are both Christians and our spiritual journey is important to us. We share a deep connection through faith, it creates a strong foundation for our relationship. Praying together is important for us and studying scripture. We don’t do this daily, it’s usually once a week together and that works for us. We also attend church together. It helps us grow closer to God and each other. These practices not only strengthen your bond but also provide guidance and comfort during challenging times. By prioritising your spiritual life as a couple, you invite God into your marriage, allowing His love and wisdom to shape your journey together.

In addition to shared practices, it’s important to support each other’s individual faith journeys. Encourage your partner in their personal prayer life and spiritual growth, and be open about your own struggles and victories. We are certainly not perfect, instead we are walking together in faith, trusting God to lead our relationship.

Marriage Tip 3 - Time together in marriage

Life can get busy, with work, friends and family, social life and other commitments. During all this don’t loose sight of each other. When my hubby and I started out in our marriage we had our regular date nights, which were lovely and fun. Now that we have a son they are harder to arrange so what we do instead is schedule brunch dates. It’s about having dedicated time together, to reconnect, have some fun and remind yourself why this is your love. We both enjoy this time together and choose not to use this time to talk about more difficult subjects. Prioritise quality time together whether that's intimate time together, romantic date nights, day dates - whatever works for you!

Marriage Tip 4 - Boundries and privacy in marriage

When you marry two families and all their values, traditions also come together. That said marriage is a partnership and we figured out early on that our marriage is exactly that ours . Our family may have had their own views about how our marriage should be and that's ok but we don’t have to follow those expectations. Establish your own boundries and respect them.

Also during our marriage we both work hard not to involve other family members in our arguments, that will not help. It’s our problem that we need to work through. Everyone will have an opinion on how you should be as a wife or husband (some people even tell you) but really it's about what is right for the two of you. You realise this during your wedding preparation.

Side note, one thing that occurs with some of my engaged couples, particularly when aiming to blend different cultures in their wedding, is the pressure from family. This can be about how family members think your wedding day should be, and traditions that they want you to incorporate. If you are in this situation or know someone who is my advice.

Make sure the two of you are clear on YOUR priorities first because everyone will make suggestions about your wedding. Remember your wedding, just like your marriage is about the two of you.
After that respectfully and honestly discuss with your family what your priorities are and get their buy-in early. Give them time to come to terms with things they may want to do that are different to what they expected.

Marriage Tip 5 - Maintaining your individuality while growing as a couple

Marriage is about building a life together, but it’s equally important to nurture your individuality. Balancing personal growth with your relationship can strengthen your bond and help you both thrive. A couple of tips to maintain your unique identity while growing as a couple.

Be each others biggest cheerleader (and critic) - Celebrate each other’s goals, passions and hobbies. Supporting your partner’s interests—even if they’re different from your own—fosters respect and admiration. Encourage “me time” for personal pursuits, whether it’s a hobby, fitness goal, or creative project, while also prioritising “we time” to connect and strengthen your relationship.
Finally, embrace change and growth. We evolve over time and so do our relationships. Encourage each other to step out of your comfort zones, try new things, and pursue personal growth. By celebrating each other’s uniqueness and individual development, you’ll build a stronger, more resilient partnership rooted in love and mutual support.

Building a happy and healthy marriage takes effort, but it all starts with a strong foundation. By focusing on these 5 key ingredients, you’re setting yourselves up for a lifetime of love and partnership. How to choose drinks for your wedding

Planning a multicultural wedding in London (or anywhere else) is an exciting opportunity to celebrate love and diverse traditions. One key aspect to consider is how much to serve when it comes to drinks. Making sure you have the right amounts of wines, beers and spirits for your wedding can be a tricky task - with lots of different factors in play. Here are seven tips to help you as engaged couples navigate drink quantities for your wedding day:

1. Know your wedding guest list

Start with a solid headcount, have a look at tips for tackling your wedding guest list . Understanding the demographics of your guests can help you anticipate preferences—whether they prefer cocktails, wine, or non-alcoholic beverages.

2. Cultural Considerations

Consider the cultural backgrounds of your guests. Some cultures may prefer specific drinks, while others might have restrictions on alcohol. Offering a variety of options, including traditional beverages, can make everyone feel included.

3. Create a Signature Cocktail:

Craft a unique cocktail that reflects your story or heritage. This not only personalizes your wedding but can also streamline your drink choices, reducing the need for a vast selection of spirits. Also consider including a mocktail for those who don’t drink.

4. Wedding Drinks - estimate consumption

A general rule of thumb is to estimate about two drinks per person for the first hour and one drink for each subsequent hour. Adjust this based on the length of your reception and the time of day and always provide a mix of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages to ensure that all guests, including those who don’t drink alcohol, feel catered to. At a minimum for a wedding you will likely need to supply drinks for the drinks reception, then beverages to accompany the wedding breakfast, something to toast with, and of course drinks for your evening party.

5. Consult Your Wedding Venue

Speak with your venue’s catering team or bartenders (if they have one). They often have experience with weddings and events and can offer valuable insights into what quantities work best based on your guest count and drink selection.

6. Consider your bar options

Depending on the venue you book there are different bar options you can have. For example

Cash Bar – The bar company (or venue) supplies the drinks and manages everything that is required. Guests pay for all their drinks either by cash or card.
Pre-Paid Bar – You decide on a prepayment to ‘put behind the bar, otherwise known as a ‘Tab’. Payment is made prior to your wedding, and if this amount is reached during your wedding you have the choice to extend the amount and/or continue as a cash bar.
Open Bar – The bar company will supply all drinks and manage everything that is required but you pay for this in advance and guests don’t pay for any drinks. The cost is dependent on the number of guests, the length of hours you will be serving drinks and the specific drinks required.

7. Plan for Leftovers

Finally, don’t be afraid to overestimate a little—especially for wine and beer. Unconsumed alcohol can often be returned or saved for future gatherings, so it’s better to have a bit too much than too little.

By considering these tips, you can ensure your wedding celebration flows smoothly and reflects the beautiful blend of cultures in attendance.

Multicultural wedding ideas

Within this post, I will be focusing on planning multicultural weddings. It can be challenging when you and your partner have different traditions and customs that you may wish to incorporate. During my time as a wedding planner, I have worked with many couples to plan their multicultural weddings, they are an excellent way to embrace and blend both your different cultures and when it's done right it is beautiful. So here are my top tips on the best way to plan your multicultural wedding, to incorporate your cultures.

1. Cultural Rituals and Traditions

This step is crucial, take time to research your customs and traditions, then discuss what you want to include and what you don’t. Be aware that family members will likely have their own expectations about what should be included, make sure you stick to what YOU both want. Don’t be afraid to adapt some things if needed to reflect your preferences, whether that is blending your wedding ceremony for example to incorporate a cultural tradition like a ceremonial blessing. This will create a unique wedding day that reflects you both.

2. Wedding Attire

Your wedding attire is a brilliant way to reflect your cultures. You could both wear your traditional dress, and/ or change at different times during your wedding into each other's traditional dress. So for example if you were incorporating the Mauritian culture, the bride might wear a saree or traditional Mauritian dress for part of your wedding whilst the groom could wear a similarly culturally significant outfit. This is a great way to balance different cultural dress codes.

You could also ask your guests to wear clothes that align with your cultures. Set a clear dress code and then give your guests ideas and guidance to choose their outfits. For example a couple incorporating Ghanaian wedding traditions into their day, might ask guests to wear a certain style of clothes and colour of kente cloth.

3. Wedding Cuisine

When planning a multicultural wedding food should always be considered. It is the perfect way to blend your cultures. Weddings provide ample opportunity to incorporate different cuisines. For example if you are of Jamaican heritage and your partner is Mauritian. You could include traditional dishes such as Jamaican patties, saltfish fritters, or jerk chicken wings during the drinks reception as small bites, then have Mauritian dishes like dholl puri, or biryanis during your actual wedding meal.

Plus, let’s not forget the desserts where you could serve a range of traditional desserts from both your cultures after the meal for guests to enjoy. This will help to create a menu that honors traditional dishes from both your cultures while catering to all guests' tastes.

4. Wedding Decorations

You can incorporate your cultural backgrounds into your wedding decor. For example if you wanted to reflect your Indian and British cultures throughout your wedding day.

You could include a traditional Indian mandap with a British floral arch during your ceremony. You could even blend the flowers using marigold flowers, which are common in some Indian weddings along with roses or peonies which are popular in British weddings.

For your reception decor, you can bring in your cultures through your centrepieces or you can include henna inspired designs on the placecards or menus, blending with traditional British calligraphy. For the evening, you could switch it up and incorporate ribbon wands or fans in your flag colours, for guests to wave about as they dance the night away. 5. Guest Favours

Your guests' favours are a nice way to showcase your cultures too and gift giving is expected in some cultures. Select wedding favors that are meaningful and culturally appropriate for both sides.

For example if you wanted to reflect your Jamaican heritage you could give guests small bottles of Jamaican rum or jars of jerk seasoning. If Mauritian small jars of jams or Mauritian tea. To avoid wastage, it is best to provide guests with a food related favour or something personalised, which are usually well received.

6. Music and Dance

Within a multicultural wedding music and dance are key, they can set the scene. Entertainment is a great way to reflect your personalities, include part of your culture and create the best atmosphere. You can incorporate diverse music throughout your wedding in a number of ways such as

have live music during your ceremony or drinks reception.

Top 5 wedding Stationery Tips

Wedding Stationery is important to provide a clear idea about your wedding design or theme (although don’t give too much away). Once you have agreed on your wedding guest list .

You need to decide how to notify your guests about your forthcoming nuptials, this includes everything from the wedding stationery style, to the wording you use, when to ask guests to reply by and more. So here are my top 5 tips that you need to consider when deciding on your wedding stationery.

1. When to send your wedding stationery

Below are suggested timescales for when to send out your wedding stationery to guests. You will also need to factor in the design and printing time for any stationery. Using a stationery designer is a good idea, as they are the experts and can tell you what is possible, with the design, colours, all the extras and timescales.

Suggested timescales

Save the Dates - these need to be sent out 9-12 months before your wedding date (and longer if its a destination wedding)
Invitations- these need to be sent out 6-9 months before your wedding date (and longer if it's a destination wedding).
RSVP - Reply-by date - This depends on when you send your invitations out, however, this should be at least 8 weeks before your wedding day. This gives you enough time to finalise guest names and numbers, your menu and on-the-day stationery.
You should allow around 3-4 weeks for guests to reply after sending them the invitation. This gives guests plenty of time to reply, as well as plenty of time for you to finalise guest names, menus etc.

The above timescales also apply if you are sending everything out electronically.

2. Wording to use on your wedding stationery

If you are intending to send a paper invitation (or have one on your wedding website), it's important to include the key details and use the appropriate wording.

Below are a few examples of what to include

Always include both your full names, date, time and venue.
Name the person/people invited - this helps reduce any confusion about who is or isn't invited
Include any dress code
RSVP Information - which should be an email or website that guests can reply to.
Extra details should include any gifting or travel information, hotels nearby, details about parking, the time that your wedding will end (sometimes called ‘Carriages’ for more formal wording).

Also don’t forget to order spare invitations, in case of additions and to ensure that you have your own copy to have as a keepsake.

3. Tracking your wedding RSVPs

Establish a system for recording all replies and gifts. Since replies and gifts are normally sent to the return address on the envelope or with the RSVP, be sure that the person or people at that address – can keep track of responses and gift deliveries. The best and most efficient way of tracking all your RSVP is creating a wedding website. If you have booked a wedding planner for a full or partial plan service, we can track the RSVP’s for you.

4. How to ask for cash in your invitations

Below are 3 fun ways to ask your guests for cash instead of a gift on your wedding day. This wording can be added as an insert with your wedding invitation or on your wedding website, along with a link of how to donate to your fund or honeymoon.

We would really prefer your presence rather than your presents! However, if you insist money towards [edit as needed - our honeymoon/revamping our home etc] would be greatly appreciated.
The most important gift to us is having you share in our special day. But if you wish to contribute in some other way. We would love a few pennies to put in our pot, for our honeymoon trip after tying the knot.
We’ve lived together quite a while and all the bills are paid, we’ve got our plates and pots and pans, our plans have all been made. We would appreciate your help though to send us on our way. A contribution to our honeymoon in a land quite far away.

5. On the day Wedding stationery that you may need

Stationery on your actual wedding day can be super useful to provide key information to guests, whilst also elevating your wedding design . The on the day stationery should be decided 6-8 weeks before your wedding, to allow time for them to be designed and printed, especially if you are working with a wedding stationery designer.

Top 10 things to do the month before your wedding

Wedding day countdown - last 4 weeks

Tick, tock if your big day is fast approaching, the days may seem like they are flying by, it can also feel hectic as there is plenty to do. Here are my top 10 things to do the month before your wedding. Unless you have been super-duper organised and done all this already!

1. Assemble gift bags

If you are buying any gifts for any of the bridal party or perhaps someone who has helped or been a great support through your wedding planning, now is a good time to buy gifts.

2. Pay your wedding suppliers

Most suppliers will normally take payment in advance via an electronic transaction but there may be one or two who require cash payment on the day. If so allocate money (that needs to be given out on the day) and decide who will have this responsibility – make sure that it’s not you though. You will both be busy mingling with your guests!

Choose your best man or bridesmaid or trusted friend/family member and ask them to keep the money and pay suppliers. Place the relevant cash in labelled envelopes and give to your trusted person to handover to the supplier on the day.

3. Create a seating plan

Now this task can cause the most headaches. Diplomatic relations are key! This task may take a few attempts and one of my tips for creating your wedding seating plan is that I advise not doing it say at the end of the day when you are tired. You really need a clear head! Think about where you seat key family members and friends! Consider where you seat the lively people and the quieter ones.

Mix it up a bit and only write things down in pencil, as you must account for changes! If you are having a printed seating plan you will normally need to confirm everything a few weeks before the wedding. This can cause difficulties as guests drop out of the wedding at the last minute. Do not underestimate how much time this task can take.

4. Wedding placecards

These small stationery items placed on tables, designate where each guest will be seated. Once the seating plan is finalised you can then arrange to get the place cards printed or my favourite hand written. There are excellent stationery designers who offer this service and they can look lovely on the day, especially if the colour or design complement the rest of the wedding theme.

5. Have a venue walkthrough

Make a list of questions beforehand that you need answered. Take your wedding planner, or one of the bridal party or family member along with you, so that they are also familiar with the venue. Plus, they can bring up anything that you forget. Also check with the venue whether anything has changed since your last visit.

6. Break in your shoes

The two of you need to avoid painful blisters on the big day. Tip: pop on some extra thick socks and walk, dance, sashay around your home in your shoes for a couple of hours each day!

7. Set a wedding rehearsal

This rehearsal is important to get everyone on board with their role for the day. If you someone escorting you down the aisle or having ushers or friends/family doing readings at the ceremony, it’s also a good idea to invite them to this rehearsal too, so that they can familiarise themselves with the church or other ceremony venue. Inform everyone in your bridal party, giving them as much notice as possible.

8. Grooming

If you are having bridal hair accessories, this is the time to try them out, in your chosen hairstyle. This is also the time to get final fittings of dresses or suits, getting any alterations made. Also collect your wedding rings and check that they fit!

9. Practice your first dance

If you are having a first dance, great. Some couples like to just improvise on the day, whereas you may prefer a more structured approach i.e. rehearse, rehearse! This is a good time to fine tune all that practice and make sure you can dance in your wedding shoes (see activity 6)! Or kick them off and dance barefoot.

10. Start your honeymoon prep

This can be another fun task! If you are going abroad, buy your currency, clothes, confirm your booking. Check that all your passports, visas and jabs are up to date, so that you are all prepared and ready to go.

With Engagement Season in full swing, now seems like an ideal time to share some top tips about planning an engagement party. An engagement is the perfect time to celebrate and capture all the excitement as you start this new chapter.

One key aspect to keep in mind is the timeline between your engagement and the start of your wedding planning journey. It may be tempting to jump right in and start making wedding arrangements. However, take a few months to savor the joy of your engagement, it's a very special time.

1. Your engagement party guest list

Deciding who to invite is crucial, make a list of your friends, family and colleagues and whittle this down to the key people you want to celebrate with you. Agreeing this now, will also help with choosing your wedding guest list as anyone who makes the guest list for your engagement party can also be invited to the wedding.

2. Your engagement party venue

Once you know roughly how many people you want to invite, you can start to look for a suitable venue. Choosing the perfect venue that matches your vibe and party goals. It’s all about finding a space that reflects your unique personality and sets the tone for an unforgettable party.

If you want a more laid-back vibe for your engagement party, you could consider holding your celebration at a chic restaurant, your favourite bar (if they have private space to hire), or a luxurious hotel.

3. Party Food and Drink

Food and drink is key to your party vibe. You can’t go wrong with great food and drink. Consider, your party style.Is it relaxed, then canapes and cocktails or sharing platters may work perfectly. Consider whether you want a party dress code or do you want it to be more relaxed. Cocktail attire is the perfect choice for any occasion without a specific dress code. It’s versatile enough to take you from daytime festivities to evening fun. The tone and style of the party will determine how your guests should dress. If it’s a formal event with a party theme, inform your guests of your preferred dress code with plenty of time, so that they can plan their outfits.

Once you settle on the planning logistics, it's time to envision and decide on the décor. Just like every other engagement party detail, the theme and decorations can be as simple or as elaborate as you'd like. Since the focus is on celebrating the two of you, capture the magic of your proposal. Choose an aesthetic that will create this upbeat, joyous atmosphere.

Firstly, what is a dry hire venue ? It means that you pay for the use of the venue's space only. Generally, this means that separately you hire in the food and drink, cutlery, decorations and sometimes the furniture etc, which other suppliers will provide. Each dry hire venue is different; some may let you use their tables, chairs etc. Others won’t. A dry hire venue gives you more flexibility to really make your mark and have input on every detail of your wedding day.

1. Northbrook Park - Dry hire venue - Surrey

Northbrook Park is a beautiful and versatile venue. It's a stunning 18th Century Manor House set in Farnham, Surrey. An ideal dry-hire wedding venue with a Manor House, Vine Room and a large Orangery to choose from to hold your wedding ceremony and reception. 2. Forty Hall - Dry Hire Venue - North London

Forty Hall Banqueting Suite (also known as the Coaching House) is a great London wedding venue in Enfield. This special space is part of the Forty Hall estate and is a fantastic, historic dry hire option. Their main hall is a fabulous size room that is light, has high ceilings and holds up to 180 guests for your ceremony or reception. It's a versatile space to decorate. There is also a garden room to hold a drinks reception or smaller ceremony.

This North London venue has lovely outdoor space to utilise for gorgeous pictures. There is also a terrace that can be used for an outdoor ceremony (for up to 150 guests). The grounds of this venue are very picturesque and includes a lovely lake for great photos. Parts of the park are open to the public, however, with the 2 weddings I have held here you forget all about that as the space is secluded from the park. 3. Hedsor House - Dry Hire Venue - Buckinghamshire

Hedsor House is a stunning Georgian manor home in Buckinghamshire. It provides the perfect setting for your dream wedding. It has the option to use as dry hire venue and has extensive experience at holding multicultural weddings here from South Asian to Persian weddings. Set within 100 acres of gardens, you will have ample options for photographs or hold an outdoor drinks reception.

The bright and airy main ballroom is the perfect spot for your reception which seats up to 150 guests and the elegant Italianate domed Centre Hall provides a stunning setting for your ceremony or reception. It's a fantastic wedding venue choice.

Top 10 things to do after you get engaged

Are you engaged? Well congratulations!! How exciting. By now you have probably told your engagement story thousands of times an d looked at your ring millions more (I know I did)! Friends and family may have already started asking you all about the pending wedding, wanting to know all the wedding planning details - When? Where? How many guests?

Now, you may have this sorted and know exactly where you want to get married, what you want to wear and who is coming! If so, well done you. But most likely you may not have had a chance to think about it all yet! This article sharing some wedding planning tips will help you to decide what to do next or first, when you are ready! So here goes!

1. Celebrate your engagement

Tell your friends, family (don’t forget those who are abroad) about your engagement but also celebrate privately just the two of you. You could even book an engagement photo shoot. Your engagement season is a very special time so enjoy it. After this period the next celebration will be your hen and stag do! So, lap up this engagement season as it can go by so quickly!

2. Decide on your wedding priorities

This is now the time to consider some of those questions that everyone has asked. First you and your partner need to discuss the essential things for your wedding that you won’t compromise on. For example, location, type of music, food or perhaps the time of the year you want to get married, it may take a little while to agree on this! (It did for me and my hubby, ‘compromise’ was our friend ��).

Make sure the two of you are clear on your priorities, because EVERYONE will make suggestions, about your wedding. After that respectfully and honestly discuss with your family what your priorities are and get their buy-in early. Give them time to come to terms with things they may want to do that are different to what they expected. But please remember a wedding is about the two of you. So, do it your way!

3. Set your wedding budget

T his is the time to have that 'how much can we afford to spend' chat! It's an important conversation and it's better to get it out of the way now so you have a realistic picture about what you can spend on your wedding.

You may have a family member or friend who want to contribute towards your wedding. So, do check how much money they are going to gift you, so that you can factor this in. The budget you set aside really depends on the type of wedding you want and how much you can realistically afford. Another idea is to decide what 3 key things you want to spend more money on. For example, this could be the venue, dress and your honeymoon or venue, flowers and great food or entertainment. Whatever it is, assign more of your budget to these items and then less money to the others. You can find more advice in my blog post on 5 tips for managing your wedding budget.

4.Choose your wedding guests

Create a rough list of the people you want to invite to your wedding, so you get an idea of numbers. You need a rough idea of your guest numbers before you start selecting venues. There is no point visiting your dream venue and finding out they can only accommodate 60 people when you plan to invite 150! Save yourself the disappointment. Identify those who must come and those who you would like to be there. Remember that each guest costs money, venues normally charge per head. 5. Select your wedding venue options

Decide where first, a location and if you already know a venue. Always check their availability. Some venues can get booked up years in advance! So, if you have your heart set on getting married at a dream location book in early. Or if not do some research about venues in your chosen area, my blog has more tips for choosing your wedding venue . Find the date/s that work for you and decide whether you want to get married at the weekend or during the week (which is often cheaper). In the UK, according to Bridebook Trend report the most popular months for weddings were July, August and September and January was the least popular.

6. Gather your wedding inspiration

This is the time to start considering what type of wedding you want. Think about the following

a. Your style – is it romantic and candlelit, a beach vibe or formal sit down, glamorous or rustic

b. Colour schemes – vibrant colours, pastel tones, or all white

c. Fun elements you may want to include.

Keep your budget in mind (as mentioned above) as there is no point falling in love with some elaborate flowers or dress that you can’t afford.

Inspiration is everywhere so don't forget to check out magazines, social media especially Instagram and Pinterest and real wedding photos—and don't limit yourself to the obvious sources. Something as unlikely as a wallpaper pattern or a scene from a favourite movie can spark your creativity.

7. Marriage Guidance

This can often be forgotten amongst the excitement of planning a wedding. But getting married is a serious thing, you are committing to spend your life with this person. Consider whether it would be useful to have pre-wedding classes. This can be a great way to work through key things like communication, how to deal with conflict, your families and your plans, where will you spend Christmas! My hubby and I did this and it was so helpful. Even if your plans change (and they will), it’s good to know where you both stand. You can arrange this through your church or if you are having a civil ceremony through signing up for pre-wedding counselling. Working through these details can be challenging but so rewarding and will make you remember what this is all about. A wedding is a day, but marriage is for life!

8. Choose your bridal party

For some this is an easy decision, for others it is painstaking, it’s important to have the conversation early before one of you starts asking friends or family. One key thing to consider is to choose people who will support you throughout the planning. You will spend time with the wedding party and they are donating their time for free. Keep the budget in mind too as you may want to pay or contribute to the bridal parties’ attire, flowers or even wedding transport, all this adds up. 9. Choose your key wedding suppliers

Start to research some of your key suppliers such as a photographer or florist. With so many talented suppliers around, choosing them can be overwhelming. It is important to book your suppliers as early as possible once you have a venue booked. However, it is just as crucial finding the suppliers that you are comfortable with, so take the time to locate those that are the right fit for your day. Also consider local wedding magazines, recommendations from family or friends, or if you have seen their work at another wedding great. 10. Hire a wedding planner

This is one of the wisest things you can do. Why? There is a long road ahead and it may feel like ages away, but time will creep up and the list of to-dos will grow. There are lots of decisions to make. If you have a busy life, with little spare time, then hiring someone like me will help. How to keep kids entertained at your wedding

Should we invite kids to our wedding? This is one question that every bride and groom-to-be should ask themselves as they plan their wedding and create their guest list.

Most couples already have friends and family members who have children so this can be a tough decision. Make it clear when sending out your invitations whether children are included, or not. Children have a tendency to get bored and fussy quite easily, something that can turn your wedding into a noisy affair. If you do decide that you want to include children in your big celebration, you’ll want to make sure that they’re happy and entertained. Here are a few points you will need to consider, and 5 ideas for keeping children entertained during your wedding.

1. Consider your wedding venues' rules

Keep in mind that some wedding venues state that if you invite over a certain number of children you may have to provide some childcare such as a babysitter or creche to keep the children occupied. This is not a bad idea and can give some of your guests who are parents a little break.

2. Children's meals

Children do cost, you still need to pay for their meal so this is something you would need to factor in when planning your wedding budget. Be aware that some venues even stipulate that if a child is over a certain age they are charged for a half adult or adult meal. Most good caterers will provide a children’s meal that caterers to the little ones needs.

3. Create an epic kids table

Setting up a few kids tables at your wedding with various activities is one of the best ways to keep smaller guests busy for hours, especially during the speeches. Add games, puzzles, activity and coloring books to the tables so that the kids can choose something that appeals to them. You could also add a few goodie bags to the table that contain treats, bubbles or a small toy.

4. Include children in your wedding activities

Children enjoy helping out and being a part of the day’s activities so give them an important job. If they feel like they’re helping out, they won’t get a chance to be bored. Another cute idea is to give each child a disposable camera so they can snap some photos on the day.

5. Let the children spend time outdoors at your wedding

If the weather is warm on the day, and your venue has outdoor space set up a few outdoor games such as Jenga or activities such as hula-hoops. If the children are a little older, you can also set up a crafts table that they can use to create props for a photo booth or a wedding memento for their parents.

Winter weddings can be so beautiful, with the cooler weather, seasonal blooms and lots of twinkly lights and candles. It's a great excuse to incorporate this season in your wedding, whilst keeping in mind the importance of keeping your guests warm and comfortable. 1. A Winter Wedding Colour palette

With the cooler months, shades of deep orange, rich reds, dark greens, deep blues and crisp whites really help to represent this season, why not incorporate some of them into your wedding. Creating a mood board is one of the best ways to start your wedding planning process. This means it’s time to think about your desired theme, style, and color palette. These are important because they will influence every decision you make moving forward.

2. Winter wedding drinks

As the weather gets colder if you are having a wedding or party keep your guests warm, with a hot chocolate. This could be in addition to a dessert table or part of it. You could create a hot chocolate station and go all out to include all the extras to make the best hot chocolate. Such as marshmallows, spices, or even a shot of whiskey, bringing in that Winter spirit to warm their bellies.

Tempt them outside with fire pits and warm blankets, in your chosen wedding colours. You could consider providing scarves or hats as an alternative.

4. Winter wedding flowers

Make sure you meet your florist and discuss your ideas and find out what flowers are in season during the Winter. Incorporate some of them into your wedding bouquet or wedding reception tables. Keeping it simple and using one or two types of flowers often achieves the most sophisticated look.

5. Wedding lights

Light up those candles (if your venue allows). There is nothing like candles in key places to create that feeling of warmth and the flickering of candles is so pretty and romantic too! Use them to dress the ceremony aisle and repurpose them later around your venue for the reception. Fairy lights are also a brilliant addition, to bring stunning, soft, lighting to your space, think about whether they can be suspended from ceilings or beams in your venue.

Cool temperatures come with fantastic palette options, and winter weddings are no exception. If you’ve decided on a wedding during the Winter months, you have picked a magical time to get married. Here is some wedding inspiration for choosing your Winter wedding colours. Not just the traditional winter wedding shades, there are a variety of other colour combinations to play with.

This colourful palette, brings in the seasons red, however with some extra sparkle. 8 top tips for tackling your wedding seating plan

Creating a wedding seating plan, is not an easy task. It can take a couple of goes to make it right and just when you think you have it sorted a guest tells you they can no longer come to your wedding! It happens and is a hot topic of conversation between my couples. Now, if you are reading this and are still struggling with your guest list, I have you covered. If you have your guest list sorted and now need to figure out where everyone sits. Then read on for some top tips to help with your seating plan preparation.

1. Start creating your seating plan early

Start planning your seating plan as early as possible. This will give you enough time to make any changes or adjustments as necessary.

2. Get an accurate headcount

Make sure you have an accurate headcount of guests who will be attending the wedding. This will help you determine the size and number of tables needed. One tip is that as guests RSVP you assign them a seat, then adjust as needed.

3. Determine the layout of your venue

It's important to understand the layout of your venue before you begin planning the seating arrangements. This will help you determine how many tables you can fit and how many guests each table can seat. Your wedding planner can advise here.

4. Decide on a wedding seating style

There are a few different seating styles to choose from, including traditional round tables, long banquet tables, or a mix of both. Consider the size of your guest list and the style of your wedding when deciding on a seating style.Different table shapes have different advantages for seating.

5. How to create a wedding seating plan

Create a seating chart to help you organize your guests. You can use a spreadsheet or a wedding seating chart software to make the process easier. My clients get access to a great tool, which helps with this, so that they can drag and drop guests names into and can rearrange it as many times as needed.

6. Consider guest preferences and relationships

When planning a multicultural or private home wedding, the seating plan often becomes a focal point for family expectations. You may find yourself navigating the gap between traditional protocols—where certain elders or family branches expect specific placement—and your own vision for a relaxed, contemporary flow.

My advice is to approach this with proactive communication. If you are deviating from tradition, share the "why" with key family members early. Framing your choices around the experience you want to create for everyone—rather than just a list of names—helps reframe the conversation, making your intention crystal clear.

7. Seat guests strategically

A further consideration is that you may want to seat guests who are more outgoing or have similar interests together. The relationships between your guests are important to consider when creating your seating plan.

For example, you may want to seat close family members and friends together or mix guests up to encourage conversation. Or you may want to seat older guests near the dance floor or put guests who do not know anyone together to encourage them to socialise. Seat guests strategically to ensure that everyone has a good time.

Don't forget your seating to - do you want to be sat with your guests or on a separate table, just the two of you away from your guests - like a sweetheart table.

8. A framework for the final seating changes

Despite the most meticulous planning, the guest list is often in flux until the very morning of the wedding. To manage this without the stress of "overwhelm," I recommend a three-step practical framework:

The week before - this is the version agreed with your venue, caterers etc. Note this version is what your final costs would be based on.
The 72-Hour Lockdown: Aim to have your final digital plan shared with your caterer and me three days prior.
The "Buffer" Seat: On larger banquet tables, we can often subtly adjust spacing to account for a last-minute cancellation without leaving a glaring gap.
The Professional Pivot: If a guest arrives unexpectedly (it does happen), my team and I handle the "invisible" addition of a place setting. We ensure the transition is seamless so that neither you nor your other guests ever senses a disruption.

Having a backup plan in case someone cancels or if a guest shows up unexpectedly is always a good idea. This will help you to make quick adjustments to your seating plan if necessary.

Spring is in the air, and I adore this season. Now as I write this it's an overcast, wet day but I know glorious Spring days are around the corner, with the blooming flowers and refreshing colours that we see after the cold winter months. Spring is a popular time for many couples to get married. If you’re one of those couples and want to add a bit of the season to your day then read on for 5 ideas for your Spring Wedding.

1. Outdoor wedding

What says Spring more than a garden wedding? Take advantage of the beautiful weather and lush greenery by hosting your special day outdoors. If your venue has gorgeous grounds make the most of them, working with the greenery, Spring blooms may also be on full display, which is a bonus. Make sure you have a contingency plan for any wet weather though!

2. Spring colour palette

Spring goes hand-in-hand with a lighter colour palette. For fresh Spring wedding colours consider yellow, pink, shades of green, blue, purple to uplift. Choosing suppliers for your wedding

If you've started planning your wedding you're likely aware of the amount of choices out there when it comes to selecting wedding suppliers. You could have 10 or more suppliers working on or at your wedding, that's numerous decisions to make. As a wedding planner, I have the experience and privilege of working with talented wedding suppliers who cover many types of services from photographers, musicians, florists, DJ’s and so much more. It’s important for you to select suppliers that fit in with your overall wedding style, budget and other preferences. But how do you choose suppliers for your wedding, read on for 10 top tips.

1. Know your priorities

You will need to decide (if you haven’t already) what 3 key things you want to spend more money on. For example, this could be the venue, dress and your honeymoon or venue, flowers and great food or entertainment. Whatever it is, assign more of your budget to these items and then less money to the others. Look for the very best supplier in that category that you can afford and book your chosen one.

2. Think logically when choosing your wedding suppliers

Consider what needs to be in place first, and which parts of your big day rely on others. For example, don’t book a DJ or band until you know your venue can accommodate a dance floor or stage. Want family-style sharing platters for dinner? Don’t commit to your catering until you know what furniture you’ll have at the reception – you don’t want people trying to balance a three-course meal on their laps. 3. Professionalism

Your wedding is not the time to ‘test out’ your friends skills at say photography or cake making. I always advise getting professionals involved in your wedding. You will benefit from our knowledge and experience. We will not be at your wedding doing half the job. You pay us to deliver, creativity, great customer service and most of all professionalism. Trust that the suppliers you choose will do just that.

4. Wedding supplier feedback

Do your research. Take time to check out suppliers' galleries or portfolios, this will give you a clearer idea about their creativity and the types of weddings they have worked on before. Read suppliers testimonials, particularly ones that others have written, such as google reviews. This will give you a great insight into the clients gushing with praise. Is there evidence of some of the feedback you would expect to see? For example as a wedding planner you may expect to see things like, she over delivered, she got our vision, she helped reduce any stress, we were able to fully enjoy our day. Do you get a good feeling from reading all this? Also look for the supplier's response, that will help you to know that they value the feedback provided. As a customer you want to feel valued.

5. Communication and connection with your supplier

During those first emails to potential wedding suppliers, see how they respond. Don’t be afraid to ask questions, including about your style, priorities and budget and how they work. Also note how they communicate. You want a supplier that is responsive. Yes we will have other correspondence from potential couples too but a timely reply (within a day or two) is not too much to ask. It’s also important to choose suppliers you genuinely get along with, so take the time to jump on a Zoom or phone or catch up for a coffee to find people you feel relaxed and comfortable around.

6. Preferred Supplier lists

Many venues require you to use their preferred suppliers, which may or may not suit your wedding style. So, find out about this before you make a booking. If the venue does work with specific suppliers, make sure that you’re happy with their experience, style, personality, and pricing. If not, it is worth bringing in your own suppliers, although note some venues may charge you for this. Say if you use your own caterer or bar staff so always check the venues terms and conditions first.

7. Be Flexible

Wedding suppliers get booked up, sometimes years in advance. If you have a Summer wedding at a weekend, know that waiting months to get back to a supplier after they send a quote could leave you most disappointed. Wedding suppliers are in high demand, particularly during the wedding season (April to September). I get that there is alot to consider and life can get in the way but don't take too long to decide. Also, if you can't book your first choice, go for your second choice or consider other options, that may be different from what you imagined but could work out brilliantly.

8. Consider your wedding season

When you get married can impact not only supplier's availability but other things too. For example your favourite flowers or or food might not be at their best on your wedding day, if they’re not local or seasonal. Also think about elements of your day, for example if you have a Winter wedding, it's best not to book outdoor entertainment. Your suppliers will be able to advise you on all of this, so make sure you build a strong relationship with them yourselves or via your wedding planner to get the best guidance.

9. Hire a wedding planner

As a wedding planner, knowing the right supplier team for my clients is crucial. I have a strong supplier network so for clients who book my full or partial planning services, I am able to recommend the best supplier fit for your wedding requirements, based on the knowledge I have of my supplier's strengths, style and expertise. It will save you having to sift through their credentials, we have already done all of that vetting for you. It is crucial to trust your planners' experience and judgment, we do this for a living. We know what works and who to choose. It can take considerable time to wade through emails, consultations, and reading reviews to pick your suppliers. You have busy lifestyles and won’t always have the capacity to take that on, why not save yourself that time and book a wedding planner to do that for you.

Top tips for styling your blank canvas wedding venue to make it look exceptional

Hiring a wedding venue that is a blank canvas, can be an absolute delight. It provides an opportunity to really make the space your own, into the dream that you have in your mind. But sometimes having an empty space to style can be alot. Here are 5 top wedding styling tips to help you plan in how to give your venue that extra special touch.

1. Wedding Styling inspiration

Before you do anything with your blank canvas venue you will need to get your ideas together to establish what style you want at your wedding. Create a mood board, whether that’s on Pinterest or something else. Narrow down your ideas, by looking at the common elements, such as is there a clear style (relaxed, elegant, modern etc), are you drawn towards certain colours. This will help to identify your preferred theme.

2. Wedding Venue focal points

When you hire a blank canvas or dry hire venue , it may be one large space to work with. To make things more manageable try to visualise your space into different areas. For example a dancefloor area, chill out area and then think about what wedding decorations or props you can use to define these areas in your venue. Sometimes all you need is one or two statement focal points, for example, a beautiful floral arrangement or floral wall displayed in a great spot or a sumptuous dessert table in another location. They also create a great spot for you and your guests to take pictures.

3. Make your space personal

Your wedding is about reflecting you as a couple and a blank canvas is a fantastic way to do this. Identify what elements are important for the both of you to have at your wedding, whether it's your love of travel, or certain type of music or book. Then use this to create key statement features in your venue, with personal touches, such a photographs, signs or artwork that reflects you both.

A top tip when I’m styling a venue is to use lighting to create an atmosphere, it's a fantastic way to transform a blank space. Illuminating key places within your venue during the evening time with lights will add drama and another look for your space. You could use uplighters, fairy lights or lots of candles. Check that your venue allows naked flames, if not use LED ones instead.

5. Wedding Table Styling

5 tips for hiring a dry hire wedding venue

Top tips when hiring a dry hire venue

Right so before we dive in, it's important to explain what is a Dry Hire Venue? When booking a dry hire wedding venue, the term “dry hire” means that you (the client) pay for the use of the venues space only. Generally, this means that you have to hire in the food and drink, cutlery, furniture, decorations etc, which will be provided by other suppliers. Each dry hire venue is different, so some may let you use their tables, chairs etc. Others won’t. Now if you book a dry hire venue there are a number of things you need to consider, which I will restrict to 5 things (this time).

1. Wedding venue details

Get clarity (in writing) on exactly what is and isn’t included in the dry hire package. For example are the tables included, will they come with tablecloths, can you provide your own alcohol and is there a charge for this. You don’t want any surprises later down the road. It's important to know as soon as possible, all that you will need to provide, so that you can budget for it. Always get this information in writing so that you have something to provide if say venue staff change. Saying oh but when we spoke to John last year he said xyz is not enough.

2. Choosing your wedding suppliers

Note down all the suppliers you will need on the day. Dry hire venues generally mean that you will need more suppliers. I have dealt with 20 suppliers for one wedding for a client. Also don’t assume that some of the suppliers will bring certain things a caterer may not necessarily provide cutlery, some may for an additional fee others will not and you will need to hire this separately. This is often a good time to book a wedding planner as we can help you find the right suppliers as we know plenty. Some venues will have a dedicated list of suppliers they have previously worked with. Note only use these suppliers if they are the right fit for you.

3. Styling a dry hire wedding venue

Before you think about decorating your dry hire venue you will need to get your ideas together to establish what style you want at your wedding. Styling a blank space is exciting as you make it into your wedding vision but also needs to be well thought through. You could create a mood board with all your ideas, then narrow these down, by looking at the common elements, such as is there a clear style (relaxed, elegant, modern), are you drawn towards certain colours. This will help to identify the preferred style you want to achieve.

4. Lighting

Don’t forget about lighting. In a blank canvas this is key, the use of uplighter's or fairy lights can make all the difference in changing your venue from a daytime to an evening look. Use lighting to create an atmosphere, it’s a fantastic way to transform your space .

5. Wedding set up timing

Dry hire wedding venues require more time to set up, as there is more to do so factor this into your planning. Or hire a wedding planner who can provide all this support. So that all you have to do is arrive, with it all looking wonderfully set up, and enjoy your celebrations.

With the current heatwave here in the UK, it seems a perfect time to share this post. Here a 7 top tips on how to handle your wedding in a heat wave, from keeping your guests cool to planning your day.

1. Wedding drinks and ice

Keeping your guests cool is key. Have lots of drinks and ice available, particularly soft drinks so that your guests don’t get dehydrated. Or how about a super cool cocktail full of lovely flavours and lots of ice!

2. Food for a Summer wedding

Staying hydrated is essential, that includes eating food with a high water content. Consider serving fruit such as watermelon, cucumbers or strawberries to guests to snack on. This will help guests to stay hydrated. You could even serve fruity skewers or a fresh fruit salad. Also include healthy salads on your wedding reception menu, perfect for a Summer wedding.

3. Fans

Another idea is to have some fans available for your guests. Whether that's large ones in prominent spots or I like a pretty handheld one, which also makes lovely gifts or a handheld motorised one.

Your wedding bouquet (and centrepieces) can dry out quickly in the heat. So provide a vase or vases for the bouquets to keep them fresh and stop wilting during the reception. Your wedding planner can assist with this.

5. Timing of your wedding day

The sun is usually hottest between 12-3pm, so keep this in mind when planning your day. For example, if you are having an outdoor ceremony plan it for when things are cooler.

6. Wedding bathroom baskets

A selection of items for guests to help themselves too in the bathroom is always a nice touch. During a heatwave or Summer wedding, provide sunscreen, aftersun and face wipes in these baskets for guests to use.

7. Ice Cream station

An ice cream station with lots of ice cream flavours or sorbets or even ice lollies to cool off your guests, will be welcome. Although only bring the ice creams out at the right time during the day, as you don't want them to melt!

How to hire from the wedding styling collection

You simply browse the full styling collection on the website.

You then make an enquiry via email natasha@pearlineevents.com indicating which items you wish to hire, where your event is and how long you need the items for.

I will check availability and then confirm the hire price, including any travel or set up costs. All of these details will be included in a quote.

Once you are happy you pay the deposit and you are booked in. Final payment needs to be made 4 weeks before your wedding or special occasion. If your event is 4 weeks or less away, then you will need to pay in full from the start.

We will arrive on the day and set it up for you, enhancing your wedding or event space.

All hire items are available for delivery within London, Kent and some surrounding areas.

Wedding Jargon explained

So you are engaged - fabulous! Now it's time to plan your exciting wedding day. During your wedding planning journey you may hear wedding suppliers using a few wedding phrases such as corkage or wedmin. Have you got any idea what they are talking about? Well this post will help you, it provides explanations for 32 of the most popular wedding planning terms that you are likely to hear.

1. Boutonniere: is a floral decoration, typically a small flower or small arrangement, worn on the lapel of a tuxedo or suit jacket. Some jackets have a boutonniere fixing under the lapel (that small strip that holds the flower stalk in place) and keeps the buttonhole upright.

2. Bustle: when the bride's train is secured with buttons/hooks under (sometimes over) her skirt to avoid it dragging on the floor for the whole reception.

3. Ceremony: the “main event” for a Wedding. It is the time when the marriage becomes legal with the words spoken by the Officiant or Celebrant.

4. Charger Plate: a decorative plate, that sits underneath your dinner plate and help to enhance your table and food presentation. You can use the charger as a base to create drama and interest in your table design.

5. Corkage Charge: some venues allow you to provide your own drinks for a fee (known as corkage fee). Always check what the fee is, this can be a considerable hidden charge that can add to costs. And if you have a venue that doesn’t charge a corkage fee - fantastic, book it!

6. Cutting Cake : A ‘behind-the-scenes’ cake to serve guests if the actual wedding cake is not large enough.

7. Corsage: is a floral arrangement typically worn by the important Women in the Bride & Groom’s family. It can be attached to a bracelet and worn on the wrist or wired to be pinned on to a blouse or dress.

8. Dry hire : is a venue that only provides the space, which gives you the freedom to decorate it how you choose. Most dry hire venues will supply tables and chairs but not table coverings, cutlery etc. So do check what is and isn’t included before you book your wedding venue.

9. Escort Cards: direct guests to a table rather than a seat. They should be arranged in alphabetical order, and have the name of the guest and the table number they are to be seated at.Once guests get to their table, if there are no place cards, they're free to choose their own seats. They can be used instead of a seating/table plan and are easier to change at the last minute.

10. Favours - small items given to guests as a gift. Edible or natural gifts are often a good choice so that they don’t get wasted. Its also a nice touch to tie your favours in with your wedding theme/style.

11. First Look – takes place before the Ceremony where the Bride and Groom are staged to see each other for the first time, with the photographers/videographers there to capture this special, private moment.

12. Master of Ceremonies - also known as MC or Toastmaster is the person nominated to make any announcements during your wedding at the relevant time. Such as announcing the bride and grooms arrival, speeches whilst ensuring people are in the right place at the right time. Wedding Planners are sometimes asked to take on this role too.

13. Micro wedding - is an intimate affair, typically with no more than 50 guests. They still feature time-honored traditions that make a wedding but on a much smaller scale.

14. OTD - this refers to On the day and can be used to refer to on the day wedding stationery, or you may find us planners using this shorthand term to describe our on the day planning service.

15. Place cards - these are usually hand made and handwritten with the name of each guest. They are placed on the reception tables for guests to locate their seat.

16. Marquee - a marquee or tipi tent placed outside, this provides a blank canvas to design your wedding style. There are a variety of structures and interiors to choose from.

17. Processional - The music played for the entrance of the bride and bridal party.

18. Reception – The Reception takes place after the Ceremony. This is where your guests will enjoy cocktail hour, dinner, and dancing. It is typically 4-5 hours long.

19. Receiving line - this provides an opportunity for the bride and groom and parts of the bridal party (parents or guardians) to greet their guests. The couple line up and guests can greet them as they walk into the reception.

20. Save the dates - small cards sent out early on in the planning to ask guests to keep the date free. Many send this save the date electronically. They are useful for overseas guests. Wording is kept brief with the key details - date, time, location.

21. Se ating plan - displays table layouts and where each guest will be seated. Needs to be clearly displayed at the entrance to the reception.

22. Send-off – Sometimes referred to as the “Farewell”. This event creates a special moment for the Couple to be “Sent off” onto their Wedding Night after the Reception is over. It can be done as simply as a big group dance on the dance floor with the Bride and Groom in the centre, rose petal toss, bubbles, or streamers.

23. Supplier meal – A meal provided for each supplier at your reception. This is often a cheaper alternative meal to what the guests have. Keep in mind your suppliers have been working for at least 6 hours when it becomes “dinner time” and a hot meal will give them that little boost of energy to finish the night strong!

24. Sweetheart table - an alternative to a top table. A sweetheart table is a smaller table with just the bride and groom seated together for their reception, allowing them to have time to spend together.

25. Toasts - involves a glass of bubbles given to each guest before the speeches to toast the bride and groom's health.

26. Top Table - table for the bride and groom and usually parents or special loved ones on either side.

27. Toss bouquet - is a smaller version of the Bride’s bouquet that is used to “toss” after the wedding meal when all the single ladies are asked to come on the dance floor and the Bride tosses the bouquet to them blindly with the hopes that whoever catches the bouquet is the next to get married.

28. Ushers - good friends or relatives of the groom or bride are chosen. They usually assist the best man and provide support on the day to help out where needed.

29. Wedding Breakfast - Not actually breakfast, just the traditional name for your first meal after becoming husband and wife.

30. Wedmin – this refers to wedding administration, all the paperwork that will need to be sorted out for your wedding. Supplier contracts, schedules, terms and conditions etc.

31. Wedding Planner – will be your everything for all the logistics, the organisation of your wedding and bringing all your suppliers together. Also referred to in some instances as a wedding coordinator.

32. Wedding Stylist - works on the design of your wedding set up at your ceremony or venue. This is all about the look, creating a style that works for your wedding from how the florals look, to the table, the venue all works together for the overall design. Stylists normally work alongside other wedding suppliers. Some wedding planners (like me) are also Stylists.

Multicultural Wedding Ideas

Multicultural weddings are about representing both cultures, that is not always easy to do and takes some thought. Your wedding day is about you, sounds obvious right? But sometimes amongst the decisions to make about the type, size and style of your wedding. If you are a couple, planning to have a multicultural wedding you may also have pressures from family to stick with cultural wedding traditions, and meet others people's expectations.

You need to aim to combine both your cultures in your wedding, in a modern way. I believe it's great to embrace parts of cultural tradition, but only the bits YOU want and leave the rest. So to help with your planning, here are three multicultural wedding ideas for you to consider.

1. Ideas for styling your multicultural wedding

Your wedding style can be used brilliantly to reflect your cultures. Think about incorporating little details that can really represent you both. For example, if one of you has a traditional cloth like kente or say a tartan you could include this in some of the details, such as having fans for guests as favours in the material or African fans made. You could have the men wear bow ties made out of the cloth.

2. Multicultural wedding attire ideas

Clothing is a fantastic way to showcase your cultures. You could ask your guests to come in traditional attire. Do provide advice though, on your wedding website or in the invitation about what that could be, for those who may not know. This attire could align with a certain culture's customs. This could be a small item like a belt or tie in a certain material or for example, if you are having a traditional Indian wedding you might ask your female guests to wear saris. Or you could ask guests to wear a symbolic colour of clothing that means something to you both.

You could even provide a selection of clothing on the day, for some of your guests to wear on your wedding day, if they wish.

3. Wedding entertainment Ideas

Your wedding entertainment provides a perfect opportunity to showcase parts of your culture. For example if you are Ghanaian heritage you could consider having Ghanaian drummers during your cocktail hour, or better still get them to open up the dance floor. The music and energy is a brilliant way to start your evening celebrations.

Multicultural weddings are a fantastic way to embrace each other’s traditions and customs and make new ones. Showing how to merge two or more cultures to complement each other, respecting the faiths and traditions/customs. Overall, this needs to be a special day that represents both of YOU, so prioritise what's important to the two of you above all else.

Choosing your wedding party

Your wedding party - is your group of bridesmaids and groomsmen that you want to participate in your wedding. They are your crew. Who you pick is important? They need to be reliable, able to handle responsibility and people that you enjoy being around. For some, selecting your bridesmaids or groomsmen is an easy decision, for others it is painstaking. So here are five top tips to help you when choosing your wedding party.

1. Choose your wedding party wisely

You will want to select people for your wedding party who will support you throughout the planning. They will be part of your team. You will spend time with your wedding party and they are donating their time for free. So think about it carefully, as once you ask it's hard to go back. Don’t just consider friends, think about your siblings and in laws too. Also be kind, some friends or family may not want to take up this role, try not to be offended.

2. Set expectations with friends and family up front

Some people may assume that you will have certain people in your bridal party, or that they will be part of your bridal party, which may not be the case. Don’t feel pressured into making decisions based on other people's suggestions. Someone is always bound to be disappointed but as long as you are happy with your decisions, that's what is important. Being part of your bridal party is a responsibility and an honour.

3. Me mindful of your wedding budget

Keep the budget in mind, as you may want to pay or contribute to the bridal parties’ attire, flowers, or even wedding transport, all this adds up. The larger the bridal party, the more details to organise.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

4. You are not obliged to reciprocate

Don't think just because you have been in someone else's bridal party that they need to be in yours! This is not the time to be returning favours.⠀

If you can’t ask all your special friends or siblings, consider some of them for other key roles on your wedding day, such as doing a reading at your church or civil ceremony. Or being an usher to show guests to their seats, or even create a special role just for them. It will show that you still want them to be involved.

How you decide to select your wedding party is entirely up to you. You may prefer to keep it small to one or two people or want to go all out with a full team of bridesmaids and groomsmen. Do what works for you.

Rain on your wedding day

5 tips for handling rain on your wedding day

Now the weather is always unpredictable! Here in the UK some days we can have rain, sun and hail all in one day. Oh, and let’s not forget the wind! So, if you are getting married here are a few wedding planning tips to handle rain on your wedding day. Hopefully, it won’t happen, but you just don’t know! So, it’s always best to be prepared.

1. Supply umbrellas

As you would expect my first top tip for what happens if it rains on your wedding day, is have an umbrella! As a wedding planner, I always have at least two umbrellas’ available for the bride and groom. If you know that rain is likely on your wedding day you may want to think about providing umbrellas for your guests, especially if part of your wedding (like the celebration is outside). You can get umbrellas cheaply or could even give them away as wedding favours. If you really want to invest in a special umbrella for the two of you, try and look for a clear design then your guests can still see your lovely faces or opt for something that stands out.

2. Photographs

It is always important to h ave a plan B (wet weather back up plan) for where you take your official pictures. If all the photographs are all meant to be outside in the lovely grounds, and it rains you will want to take it indoors. Speak to your photographer during your planning, to discuss what other great spaces could be used inside for lovely pictures too.

3. Footwear for a rainy wedding day

Consider as a bride having a pair of back up shoes, that one of your bridal party can keep close by for you. There is nothing worse than getting mud all over your beautiful wedding shoes. If its raining when you leave out wear a different pair of shoes to the ceremony so that you keep your bridal shoes nice and dry. Or change into the spare shoes when you are taking your photos, to keep your gorgeous shoes in pristine condition. Or if you really want to branch out wear some wellies!

4. Shelter

If you have dreams of having any part of your wedding outside, such as a drinks reception in your venue’s beautiful grounds do check with the venue whether there are any sheltered areas available should the rain fall! Or whether one can be created such as a small gazebo. If there isn’t speak to your venue to find out what their backup location is for an indoor option, if needed.

5. Keep calm

Whatever weather you are faced with take it in your stride and keep calm and don’t panic! Try not to let the weather dampen (see what I did there ��) your day, just enjoy every moment of your special day, rain and all, its all part of the memories.

Congratulations, you are engaged! Looking for wedding inspiration, is a rite of passage once you are engaged. Time to dream and get inspired right. But if you are having a multicultural or fusion wedding, where do you find multicultural wedding ideas?

When I got engaged, like many other black or other brides-to-be of colour I struggled to find inspiration from the mainstream wedding blogs and magazines. Why because at that time (5 years ago) most of these options did not contain women of colour. Things have not moved on that much in the wedding industry in the last 5 years, but they are changing, gradually.

Today, I am sharing 5 top wedding blogs to help inspire you for planning your multicultural or fusion wedding. Oh, and before I start let me explain. A multicultural wedding is when couples are interested in combining two or more cultures, or traditions into their wedding. This can also be referred to as cross cultural or a fusion wedding . Wedding Styling: Five tips for choosing your wedding table design

Your wedding table design may not be at the top of your wedding planning list. However, it is important. Your wedding table can really impact on the look and feel or your wedding reception. It is a place where you and your guests may spend quite a bit of time (if you have a sit-down meal). I absolutely love developing wedding table designs, for my clients. You can be SO creative and seeing the result, gives me a fantastic warm feeling. So today, I thought I would share 5 top tips to help you when deciding on your wedding table design.

1. Gather your wedding table design ideas

Before you do anything with your wedding table design, get your ideas together. Wedding Inspiration can be taken from all areas of life, not just other wedding table designs. For example, focus on the things you’re passionate about whether that’s travel, food, interiors, history or fashion. Also think about the colours, visit your local homeware store, and see what paint samples or wallpaper you are drawn to.

2 . Create a mood board

Create a mood board, whether that’s on Pinterest or something else, or even collect material samples, cuttings from a magazine. It’s a fantastic way to start to bring together all the inspiration and ideas that you have collected about your wedding table. Narrow down your ideas, by starting to look at the common elements of your wedding table ideas, such as is there a clear style (relaxed, elegant, modern etc) and tone, are you drawn towards vibrant colours, relaxing pastels or perhaps a more monochrome palette.

3. Select the key elements for your wedding design

Consider what aspects you could bring out in your wedding table setting through the type of table you choose (such as long trestle tables or round tables) the place settings, tableware, centrepieces. Your wedding table is a fantastic way to showcase your wedding style and both your interests. And don’t forget fun elements too like table names or mascots. All of this is so important to consider especially if you are using a dry hire venue, regardless of whether you are having an intimate wedding or a larger one.

4. Source exquisite items

Search for talented wedding suppliers who can provide the items you need. Ensure that you use exquisite items from the glassware to sumptuous high-quality linen (tablecloths, napkins) or furnishings, to make it feel exceptional. Also consider getting items made to customise and personalise the experience for you and your guests. Especially if you are having an intimate wedding, you can really go to town on your gorgeous wedding table setting.

5. Bring in some candles

Don’t forgot to include candles within your wedding table design. Candles will help add impact to your table and great ambience when lit (do check that your venue allows real candles, some only allow LED's). Consider what type of candles you will use such as votive, taper candles or pillar candles and how you will use them throughout your table design.

A clear wedding design and exceptional styling will help make any space look amazing. With wedding table styling all the details matter, including the little ones. Each element on your table should help to enhance the overall design.

The difference between a wedding planner vs a venue coordinator

Wedding Planner Vs Venue Coordinator

1. Roles of a wedding planner v a venue coordinator

You may have been offered a venue coordinator as part of your wedding venue package, but what does it mean? I have been asked before what’s the difference between a wedding planner vs venue coordinator. And do you need both. So today, I thought I would provide some advice to explain some differences between a venue coordinator and a wedding planner.

Venue coordinators are great, I have worked with some brilliant ones. The key thing to clear up are our roles. A venue coordinator does not work for you; they work for the venue. Their focus is to safeguard the interest of the venue, not your interests. They will ensure your other wedding suppliers adhere to any of the venue’s guidance, they will coordinate the in-house team, show you room layouts, menu options, wine packages etc.

Whereas an independent wedding planner (like me) works solely for you and your interests. Our focus is your whole wedding. Guiding and supporting you on anything related to your wedding, in the run up and on your special day.

For example, wedding planners will be interested in your wedding design plans, tracking RSVPs, helping to manage your wedding budget, set up, to practical logistics like how will you, your bridal party arrive, making sure your suppliers provide what you need and arrive where they are meant to etc. Giving you peace of mind that everything is taken care of.

2. Your Wedding Suppliers

Your venue coordinator may suggest suppliers you can use, based on their recommended list. Whereas your wedding planner will source specific suppliers, (if you need this part of the service) who are a right match for you and your wedding. Undertaking all the research, so that you don’t have to. Your wedding planner will also be the point of contact for your suppliers, to work through the logistics.

For example, if you have gone for a dry hire wedding venue. It is often useful to have a wedding planner onboard with expertise to plan the logistics in venues like these, so that nothing is overlooked. We will be able to review all the plans and make provision for anything you might have forgotten. Most venue coordinators will not do this, although there are some good ones.

On the day when issues arise with your suppliers, your wedding planner will find a solution to whatever the issue is, so that you don’t have that headache to deal with. If you don’t have a wedding planner your venue coordinator may need to liaise with you on your wedding day to help with any unresolved issues. This is not what you want to be thinking about on your special day.

3. Wedding Design

Venue Coordinators do not work on your wedding design. They can show you how the venue has been styled before, but they do not create a wedding design for you, that is unique to you.

A Wedding Planner will design your ceremony and reception (if needed). We can help you choose your colours, linens, flowers, table set-up and so on, that reflects your personalities. We will be there to coordinate between your florist and lighting to ensure they provide what you need. And will be there to set it all up on the day, bringing your gorgeous vision to life, checking and double checking everything is as you requested, whilst you sip on your bubbles and get ready in peace.

4. Wedding scheduling

A wedding timeline may not be something that you are thinking about right now but nearer the time, it is essential. Your wedding venue coordinator will provide a timeline from the point you reach the venue, when your food will be prepared and served (if the venue is providing catering) which is only part of your wedding.

Your wedding planner will provide a schedule that details all aspects of your day, from the moment you open your eyes on your beautiful wedding day. We will know everything that is happening with your wedding day and will factor this into your detailed timeline. From scheduling arrival times for all your suppliers, your bridal party, when and which photos will be taken, what songs you wish to have played for each dance, when your dancing starts, what happens to your gifts at the end of your wedding and so much more. We cover everything, so that you can have peace of mind that it’s ALL taken care of.

5. Wedding Planning Continuity

With some venues, the venue coordinator you are working with now, may not be the person who is assigned to work on your actual wedding day. This can be unsettling, especially when you have built a good rapport with your venue coordinator.

During the 9 months of planning my own wedding our venue coordinator changed 3 times as people left the role for other jobs. I was told a week before my wedding that a new venue coordinator would be looking after us on our special day. This left me feeling frustrated and unsettled. I had to inform this new contact of all my specific wishes and trust that it would be done (as unfortunately I did not have a wedding coordinator for my day and so wish I did). As your wedding planner on the other hand, we will be with you throughout your wedding planning journey, we do not change.

Don’t make the mistake of not hiring a wedding planner because your venue has a wedding coordinator. There are great venue coordinators and brilliant wedding planners, but we do different things.

Investing in a wedding planner earlier in your journey will save you from heartache and stress closer to your wedding. Venue coordinators and wedding planners can work well together, to ensure you have the absolute best day.

Booking a wedding venue - 5 tips on how to choose your wedding venue

Booking a wedding venue can be challenging. Finding the right wedding venue takes a lot of time and research and can often be one of the hardest parts of planning a wedding. You need to make sure that your venue ticks all the right boxes before you make a final decision.

Your wedding venue will influence your budget as well as the atmosphere on the day. So before booking, read five important things on how to choose your wedding venue.

1. Wedding Venue size

Look at how many people you’re planning to invite to your wedding versus the number of people the venue can comfortably cater for, particularly in light of any restrictions that the venue may have with social distancing. You do need a balance though if a venue is too large, it can affect the atmosphere and the overall look and feel. Put an initial guest list together before you start venue shopping so that you can make a better decision. You may find my blog post on how to tackle your wedding guest list helpful.

2. Exclusive wedding venues

Some venues will allow you to have exclusive use of their venue. I think it’s wonderful when you are the only couple getting married at the venue. You then have full use of the venue and hopefully its grounds. Some wedding venues will allow different weddings to take place the same day or they may allow other people to use their grounds on your wedding day, for example if it is a historical landmark. This may not bother you but if it does please do check this first.

3. Wedding venues indoor space

If you have dreams of having any part of your wedding outside, whether that's your wedding ceremony or drinks reception in your venue’s beautiful grounds. Do check with the venue that there are any sheltered areas available should the rain fall! Or whether one can be created such as a small gazebo. If there isn’t speak to your venue to find out what their backup location is for an indoor option, if needed.

4. Wedding reception drinks

Alcohol and drinks may be a big part of your wedding so it’s important to find out whether the venue can supply the drinks or if you have a dry hire venue whether you can bring your own alcohol. Do find out what the costs are. You will also need a licensed bartender to serve alcohol, find out whether the venue can assist with this, so that you can factor those costs into your final budget.

5. Venues Preferred suppliers

You’re going to be working with several different suppliers in the time leading up to and on your wedding day. Many venues require you to use their preferred suppliers, which may or may not suit your wedding style. So, find out about this before you make a booking. If the venue does work with specific suppliers, make sure that you’re happy with their experience, style, personality, and pricing. When a venue works with preferred suppliers, it normally means they are confident in their experience and ability to deliver. However, in my view it’s more important for you to choose suppliers that fit in with your overall wedding style, budget and other preferences.

5 tips for tackling your wedding guest list

Do you have the headache of sorting out your wedding guest list? Which family members do you invite to your wedding? Or do you have to cut your wedding guest list. Unfortunately with the impact of Covid-19 on weddings, this is a reality for some. Read on for five tips on handling your wedding guest list.

1. Reduce your wedding guest list

With the current climate, there may be a need to reduce your wedding guest list to hold a smaller, more intimate wedding. However, cutting your wedding guest list is sometimes not an easy task. Review your original guest list and place your names in a group A or B list. Group A – those who you really, really want at your wedding first, if they can’t come then you can consider who else to invite, in group B! It may take a couple of iterations to get to your final reduced guest list. You can also consider splitting your wedding and having two events, if your venue will allow this, with a smaller wedding first and a bigger celebration at a later date.

If you must minimise your guest list, explain this to friends and family, hopefully the majority will understand that they can’t be invited. Also remember that even if certain friends or family cannot be at your wedding consider using technology and arranging to have your wedding (or parts of it) live streamed. I know it’s not the same as being there in person, but at least your friends and family still get to see parts of your beautiful day.

2. Don’t Assume People Won’t Come

Your family may be trying to persuade you to invite a relative you have never met. You know those ‘second cousins or the Great Aunt that you have only seen once in your lifetime’. This is not the way forward for inviting guests to your wedding. This is an attempt to try to get around wedding guest list etiquette rules by saying, —"he or she won’t come anyway.” Don’t fall into this trap, as you may well find that they do come. It’s your wedding. So, make it clear to your family what YOUR expectations are. For example, if you are only inviting immediate family and not your great aunt or uncle say so from the outset, so that there are no surprises.

3. Let Your Partner Manage Your In-Laws

During wedding planning, it can get tense - your goal should be to maintain a good relationship with your in-laws during the wedding planning process. Even if you (or your parent/s) are contributing more money than say your partners, you may still want to allow them to invite a certain number of guests. While there may be disputes as to who those people are, let your partner work with his or her parents to handle disagreements.

4. Plus One

Do you invite your friends’ partner or new boyfriend to your wedding? Perhaps, if one of the people you want to invite is in a long-term relationship, it may be fair to invite the partner if you get on with them, so include both names on the invitation.

Consider whether you are open to a friend bringing a guest and are you are happy to pay for them? If so then include the friends name and guest and ask them to confirm who it will be. If not, be clear that the invitation is only for the person named on the invitation.

5. If Problems Arise, Don’t Freak Out

Even after taking these steps, proper wedding guest list etiquette may escape your parent/s or in-laws, who may think they have special rights. If your parent/s are trying to invite unwanted guests to your big day, have a plan as a couple to deal with this. Your budget and venue will also impact your decision. Can your wedding venue accommodate these additions?

Also, some guests may not be able to travel to your wedding or may not want to. Try to understand and keep calm about it. You can still have a fantastic wedding day, despite these challenges. Its all about marrying your love, your best friend.

Wedding planning can be intense and dealing with the guest list handling can be particularly difficult. There is much to consider so I hope this provides you with some wedding guest list tips to help. Please remember this is your wedding day, it is up to you to decide who comes to your wedding. There will always be some sort of wedding guest politics, it’s how you handle it that matters. Keep calm breathe and find a solution that you and your partner can live with.

Multicultural weddings - how to include your culture in your wedding day

3 tips on planning multicultural weddings

Getting married comes with different aspects to consider and when you and your partner are from different countries, cultures or races, the question arises how do you include both your cultures at your wedding? Multicultural weddings are a fantastic way to embrace each other’s traditions and customs. Showing how to intertwine two cultures to complement each other, whether you make subtle references to your heritage or make it obvious.

My hubby is from Trinidad and Tobago. I was born in the UK and my parents are Jamaican. And yes, even though we are the same race, we still had cultural differences that we had to manage. We chose to hold our wedding in the UK and had guests from different parts of the world who flew in. We wanted to reference Trinidad and Tobago in small ways as well as my UK influence and Jamaican heritage. Combining your two backgrounds on your special day is beautiful but can also be tricky. So, read on for three tips on how to celebrate your different cultures on your wedding day.

1. Multicultural wedding ceremony

If you are looking to put your own stamp on your wedding, incorporate key elements into your wedding ceremony, this is a great way to reflect your background, future and unity. Whether you weave in cultural or family traditions or customs. Alternatively, you can use this as an opportunity to create new ones.

I have assisted at a cross cultural wedding where the bride and groom were Buddhist and Hindu. They held two ceremonies on the day to reflect both of their cultures. They also provided a useful wedding programme for every guest to explain each part of the ceremony, the rituals involved and what it signified. A lovely touch to give your gorgeous wedding day even more meaning and it educates your guests on your culture and keeps them engaged too.

Or you could spread your wedding over a few days, have your traditional cultural ceremony one day and then your white wedding another day. Find a way that works for you.

2. Multicultural wedding invitations

Using your wedding invitations or on the day wedding stationery (for example table menus, place cards, seating chart) is another great way to weave both your cultures into your wedding day. Work with a stationery designer to create a style that reflects your culture from unique designs to a stationery print around your country’s flag colours for example or your wedding colour palette.

Or if you want to keep it more subtle how about creating or purchasing a special customised sticker. I purchased stickers which had the Trinidad and Tobago flag on them, in a small heart shape and included those on our wedding invitations. Or you could work with a stationery designer to create your own monogram with your initials, such a lovely personal touch.

3. Music and dancing at multicultural weddings

Within a multicultural wedding, music and dance is key. It is one of the best ways to combine two cultures on your special day. This could be through arranging a performance of a certain style of music or dance that reflects each of your backgrounds. I have seen this at a couple of my client’s events, one example where they had Ethiopian and Ugandan dance performances to reflect both their cultures. It was so much fun to see both dance performances and the energy and enjoyment that it brought to the couple and guests. Also if appropriate, consider having an MC to explain the background to some of the dances, so that guests can understand the true meaning.

I hope these tips provide some inspiration about how to incorporate your culture into your multicultural wedding. There are of course lots of other ways you can reflect it too, through your food and drink, wedding favours and of course your attire. Planning a multicultural wedding can be so much fun. Wedding planning fun: 5 fun wedding planning ideas to do during lockdown

Wedding planning fun

With most of us in lock down at home due to the corona virus, it has brought many challenges. If you had to make the sad decision to postpone your wedding, that will have been heart-breaking. So now more than ever I believe we need to have some wedding planning fun, where we can. This is the perfect time to fine tune your wedding planning to make your day even more special. So, if you are getting married later this year or next year, I am going to share five fun wedding planning ideas that you can do at home during lock down. Don’t worry none of them involve a spreadsheet!

1. First Dance

Are you having a first wedding dance? If so, what will you be dancing to and how? Will it be an upbeat track? A lovely slow romantic one? Or perhaps a combination of the two - a wedding dance mash up. We had a dance mash up at our wedding, starting with a slow dance to All of Me (by John Legend), then had the upbeat Danza Kuduro (by Lucenzo) mixed in. Our guests loved the surprise.

If you are going to do a choreographed wedding dance, then this is the time to get in some practice! Don’t leave it till the last minute. Perhaps you need some dance lessons – there are loads of options online, or maybe you are going to choreograph your own dance, which can be great fun!

2. Pamper Time

Get your beautiful skin ready, so that it glows on your wedding day. Preparation is key with skin care. Do some at home pampering, with weekly face masks. While you are at it, give your nails some special treatment too, to help get your nails and hands wedding ready. So put your feet up and get pampering.

3. Virtual meetup

Why not arrange to have a virtual meetup via Skype or Zoom with your bridal party. You will get to see each other and this is a fun way to introduce everyone and fill them in on your wedding planning so far. Perhaps tell everyone to bring a glass of their favourite something and use the time to have a good catch up too. Hopefully there will be lots of laughter.

4. Choose your wedding songs

Have you started to think about some of the songs you might want during your wedding day? This could be ideas about the songs you want at your wedding ceremony or what you want the DJ to play at your fabulous wedding reception. Those wedding songs that will get you and your guests up and dancing. Get out your playlist and get selecting oh, and while you are at it, have a dance off with your other half!

5. Drinks

Have you considered having a signature cocktail at your wedding reception? This can be a fun way to show your guests more of your personality. Or perhaps if you have a colour theme for your wedding, consider creating a drink or two to match with the theme. Whether it’s an alcoholic cocktail or a mocktail see what’s in your drinks cupboard and get mixing, or research cocktail options online or even sign up for an online cocktail making class.

So, I hope this gives you some fun wedding planning tips on what do during lock down and I am sure you will come up with more of your own ideas. Wedding planning can be full on and there are delightful things involved too, so make sure you have some fun along the way. Laughter is good for the soul!

Old Wedding Traditions and Modern wedding ceremony ideas

Weddings are wonderful celebrations of the union of two people. There are many traditions entwined in a wedding, which we have all seen or even participated in. Do you ever wonder why we do these things, like tossing a bridal bouquet? In this post I highlight three UK wedding traditions and their meanings and explain two new modern wedding ceremony ideas, as well as the meaning of colours in your wedding, for you to consider. I also have a guest contributor, lovely Jennifer Patrice , who knows first hand about modern approaches, as she conducts them as an award winning Wedding Celebrant!

Old Wedding Traditions

1. Something old something new

You've heard the saying "something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue" but what does it all mean? This tradition comes from an Old English rhyme, which is thought to have been around since 1883!

Something old represents continuity; normally something given to the bride by a happily married woman. Such as jewellery, or a hairpin.
Something new offers optimism for the future couple; this can be something new that the bride wears like the dress, shoes, veil etc.
Something borrowed symbolizes borrowed happiness; an item is lent to the bride, by a family member or even a friend. It is thought the bride must return the item after the wedding to ensure good luck.
Something blue stands for purity, love, and fidelity. Some brides wear a garter with a touch of blue or have a piece of blue ribbon tied to your bouquet. Or worn underneath your dress.
And a silver six pence in her shoe this last part of the rhyme, is not as well used. The six pence coin was a symbol of prosperity. It was also superstitious as it was said to help ward against any evil done by frustrated suitors!

2. Brides Wedding Bouquet

In Ancient Rome, brides carried or wore flower garlands, believing that flowers signify new beginnings, fidelity and hope of fertility. In the Middle Ages, strong-smelling herbs and spices were thought to ward off and drive away evil spirits, bad luck, ill health and help mask the smell of body odour. Nowadays we carry them because we like the look of flowers! Well I do anyway!

Tossing the Bouquet is a tradition that stems from England. Women used to try to rip pieces of the bride's dress and flowers to obtain some of her good luck. To escape from the crowd the bride would toss her bouquet and run away. Thank goodness things have moved on, since then!

3. Why do we have a wedding cake?

• The wedding cake has been part of weddings since medieval times. Originally cakes were made of wheat which was a symbol of fertility and prosperity. As a relic of once performed fertility rites, these ‘wedding cakes’ would have been thrown at the bride!

• Unmarried guests scrambled for the pieces, and they would place them under their pillows to aid their own fortunes in marriage. It is believed that the tradition of having a wedding cake stems from this strange custom.

• The typical white in a cake symbolises purity. The joint task of the couple cutting the cake was meant to symbolize their first joint task in married life. The gesture of feeding cake to each other is believed to be a symbol of the commitment the couple are making. It is also tradition to keep the top tier of the cake for the couple’s first child’s christening.

Modern Wedding Ceremony ideas

So now onto some modern wedding ceremony ideas, if you fancy doing something a little different. Here are two modern symbolic rituals and their meaning, along with useful information about the colours you use, for you to consider, courtesy of Jennifer Patrice, an award-winning Celebrant. Over to you Jennifer.

A symbolic ritual is an impressive addition to any ceremony, they are theatre and – most importantly – it is a way for the guests of the couple to visibly participate in the events.

There are no hard and fast rules to a symbolic ritual, it’s up to the couple which way they want to go, but there are some things to remember. A ritual should be simple to perform; have a clear beginning and end; be suitable for the venue; represent acting in harmony; be easy to describe its meaning and most importantly it should be FUN.

1. Ring warming

The tradition of a ring warming is that the rings are passed around among guests before the ring exchange. I always like to involve the mothers of the couple at this point, the mother of the groom collects his ring, sends it round the guests and it comes back to her. The mother of the bride collects her ring sends it round the guests and it comes back to her. Each guest holds the rings for a short while, giving them a blessing, sending the couple their love, hopes, thoughts and good wishes for a happy future together. The mother of the groom then hands the grooms ring to the bride and the mother of the bride then hands the brides ring to the groom. When the rings are then exchanged they are imbued with the love, joy and support of their guests to take them forward on their new journey.

2. Sand pouring ceremony

Sometimes referred to as a "blending of the sands" ceremony each person pours a small container of sand (often two different colours, so that you can see the different layers) into a larger vessel to symbolize their "coming together" as a couple.

Recently I included a sand pouring ritual in a wedding I conducted, and the couple were joined by their three children to take part. As this was happening this is what I said

“ Before my closing words I am going to ask the children to join us. With the help of Vicky and Bink they are going to perform a sand pouring ceremony. Today as Vicky and Bink have sealed their commitment to each other with the exchange of rings they also make a commitment to their children. They recognise the significant role that they play in this marriage celebrated today.

They will now join Vicky and Bink in this commitment by each contributing a part into one blended family. Today, this is symbolised through the pouring of these three different coloured sands, each representing one of the children. As the three sands are poured into the family's one united container, they will be joined together as one. Just as these grains of sand can never be separated and returned each into their own individual containers, so will the bond with your family be forever united and inseparable.”

3. Colours

There are many interpretations for colours, weddings and ceremony rituals are no exception to that rule. As many rituals do use colours it is handy to know the meaning of them in relation to weddings and married life. Below are a small selection:

Red = Passion for life, physical energy and health;
Pink = Tenderness and romantic love;
Orange = Sweetness, trust and creativity;
Yellow = Respect and spontaneity;
Green = Compassion, unconditional love and balance;
Light Blue = Communication, harmony and self-expression;
Dark Blue = Intuition, wisdom and emotional intelligence;
Purple = Peace, spirituality and selflessness;
White = New beginnings and goodness.
